Just continuing the answering my email thread….I’ve had several people ask something along the lines of “how do I cancel a book I purchased by mistake?”
Similar to a retail store location, Amazon does allow you to return eBooks with one catch: you have to make the return within seven days of purchase. That’s Amazon’s stated policy, but from personal experience I have seen returns going back six months ago as, for example, I am seeing a few returns of versions of my books that I updated and retitled back in November of last year.
There are a couple of ways to cancel a purchase I will discuss here, although I am sure there are other ways to do it.
The first way is fairly straight-forward: assuming you made the purchase directly from your Kindle, immediately after you press the purchase button and you get the confirmation screen, there is a menu option toward the bottom that asks if you purchased it by mistake. If you select that option, two things happen: (1) your account is not charged, and (2) assuming your wireless is still on, the book will be immediately deleted from your Kindle.
When I say “assuming your wireless is still on,” if you immediately turn your wireless off after the book downloads to your Kindle – but not jumping away from your confirmation page – you could theoretically read the entire book without it being deleted from your Kindle. That would mean a couple of things, dishonesty / theft chief among them, but I don’t know too many people who would leave their wireless off for the duration of the reading of the book. Besides, Amazon probably will know you read it and re-charge your account or, worse, terminate your account from the Amazon website entirely as that is a violation of the Terms of Service you agreed to upon registering your Kindle.
Doesn’t seem worth it to me.
Another way is to contact Amazon’s excellent Kindle Customer Service department: I’ve said it before, but they have to be one of the best in the business. The hardest way to contact Amazon’s Kindle customer service is to call them directly. Why is it hard? You have to memorize or keep the number handy. In case you need to contact them, here are their numbers:
- USA number: 1-866-321-8851
- Outside the USA number: 1-206-266-0927
Of course, you can contact Amazon’s Kindle Customer Service department for things other than returning a book purchased in error.
Alternatively, and the way I have contacted them is to have them contact me. How? If you go to the Amazon web page, click the “Help” link located on the top right-hand side of the web page; this is also located at the bottom of every web page on the Amazon site. After you click the “Help” link, look for an orange (or does it look kind of yellow) “Contact Us” icon on the right-hand side.
After you clock the “Contact Us” icon, if you are not logged into your Amazon account you will need to do so in order to proceed. After you have logged in, select a reason for your need for assistance, and Amazon will contact you either via email, phone call, or an online chat. Select the “Phone” option, enter your phone number, and your phone will start ringing in less than ten seconds with a live, English-speaking, representative.
Hope that helps!
