One is a homicide, involving a corpse found buried near a hiking trail in Montauk. The other deals with the complex interactions of competing sinister and violent drug cartels. Jericho comes face to face with homicide, gang wars, human trafficking, immigration issues, and racial tensions. Things come to a boiling point in this twisty story, until the life of the amazing detective himself is in serious jeopardy. As in all Jericho novels, the ending is shocking and unexpected.

About the Author:

n a near cynical world which we are currently living in, Charlotte finds comfort in the readings of Regency Romance writings, one of her favourite would be Laura Kinsale’s Flowers from the storm where the female character loves and saves the male lead character who is a stroke victim. It was such writings which inspired her to be an author herself.

In Charlotte’s writings, the characters are able to see beyond the imperfections of each other and to accept and love one another, just the way one is.

Isn’t this true of our inner self?

To be able to find someone who is able to see the beauty in us, in spite of all imperfections we might have. Isn’t this true of what love really should be? Ever accepting, ever loving, ever seeking.

May you find love and acceptance in Charlotte’s writings.

Book Reviews and Why I Write Them

May 30, 2018 by Michael Gallagher Leave a Comment

As A Blog Publisher, Why Do You Write Book Reviews?

That’s actually a nicer way of summarizing some of the emails I’ve received over the last few years!

Yes, I do write reviews for the books I read, and starting in 2011 I started to make a point to write a review for most things I read.

Why do I write reviews? Well, I do read what others write for reviews, and those reviews do influence my decision to (a) first try out the free Kindle sample, which a lot of the time leads me to (b) purchasing a book.  I appreciate the time and effort complete strangers took to write a review to tell me the good and the bad, and common courtesy tells me I should do the same.  If I like a book I’ll tell you – if I didn’t like it, well, let’s just say I’ve been told my professional career has been limited a time or two for being too honest (i.e., blunt).

If you’re like me, you look at the customer reviews in order to see if you want to investigate a book further – while my general cutoff is a book needs to be at least a 4 out of 5 stars, I also read the text of the review: things that may make a reviewer dislike a book might be favorable to me and, things a reviewer absolutely loved (and mentioned in the review) could be a complete turnoff to this grey-haired guy.

I also look to see if a review on the Amazon website is from an “Amazon Verified Purchase,” which tells me the person writing the review actually purchased the item from Amazon; I don’t think people should be able to review books on Amazon unless they purchased it.

Why do I look for an Amazon Verified Purchase?  I’ve been burned too many times by friends and family of the author or shill reviews – reviewers that immediately rate everything a five star, they leave about one sentence of commentary (the minimum for an Amazon review is something like 20 characters of text), and they are generally marked by it being the one and only review a person has ever written on the Amazon website; these are typically reviews done in order to inflate a book’s overall rating.  Another good indicator is a book will have a flurry of reviews around the same day, are short and all five stars, etc.

With the thousands of books I have previewed prior to telling you about on www.fkbt.com over the years, I’ve learned to spot the friends and family reviews pretty quick.

The “star” rating on Amazon can be broken down like this:

5 stars – I love it
4 stars – I like it
3 stars – It’s ok
2 stars – I don’t like it
1 star – I hate it

As far as the reviews I write, I try to write an honest assessment if I liked something or not without providing a spoiler: why write a spoiler and ruin it for everyone?  I also think your and my taste regarding the likes and dislikes of a particular book are more honest than a paid book reviewer a major publishing house contracts with to have in a book’s advertising materials. My motto is to keep it short and sweet on your likes and dislikes without providing a Cliff’s Notes version of the book.

There are also very few things I “love” in terms of reading as well as very few things I “hate” as both, to me, are very extreme ends of the spectrum.  Not to sound too hokey, but love and hate are permanent things and very few things qualify for either emotion.

Some people think I shouldn’t be writing reviews because I have this blog, and due to the blog’s popularity it could influence people’s behavior, especially if I “give” it a bad rating – every once in a while I will have a rather interesting dialogue with a few folks regarding the same. My response to those type of comments is my – and anyone else’s – review of a book reflects my opinion only and I don’t “give” out anything: your opinion on a book or item may vary, and we probably won’t agree on everything. For example, something I really liked you may absolutely detest and puke all over it.

The same could be true for something you thought was outstanding and I may question why it was published in the first place. When I read reviews sure, the star rating is important (see above), but I don’t put that much weight into the “star” rating as I look at the comments – mainly to see if they are substantive to back up the rating as well as to see what the reviewer’s pluses and minuses are with the book.  If you look at those written comments, sometimes they match up to the “star” rating and sometime they do not.

I also discount reviewers who rate everything a 5 star and I imagine most others do, too.

If you would like to read the reviews I have written, you can click here or type in http://smarturl.it/mgreviews into your web browser.  As I type this post, I have quite a few books I need to review but you will see just about everything I’ve read over the last ten years – you’ll see I do read a lot of the free book offers, and long time readers of the blog will also see I have continued my science fiction kick.

You can vote on the individual reviews on the Amazon website if you think they were helpful or not with a simple “Yes” or “No” vote – you can click on those voting options immediately below the text of each review.  The more “Yes” votes you get in proportion to the overall votes – as well as some super-secret factors Amazon won’t divulge – you will move up in the review ranking scale (yes, Amazon ranks the reviewers).  Compared to prior years, I’ve dropped down in the rankings: I’ve kept pretty steady with the numer of reviews I’ve written but clearly more people have more time on their hands than I do!

So, yes, I will continue writing reviews and I hope you will do the same!

Anyway, that’s all I can type about for now. Have a great rest of your week!

Michael

Battery Life for Fire Tablets

May 29, 2018 by Michael Gallagher Leave a Comment

I’ve received a few questions regarding the battery life on a Fire tablet; here’s an abridged version of one I periodically receive:

I’m wondering if you are having a problem with the Fire battery life, or if you’ve heard of it being a problem? The other night I was reading on a fully charged Fire. Wifi was off. I read for about 30 minutes and it went from 100% to 93%. That seems like a big drop considering I could go weeks on my Kindle without recharging. This was simple book reading, no games or other activity. I definitely find I have to charge my Fire far more often than my Kindle.

I haven’t noticed any battery issues with my Fires, nor have I seen any issues with my kids’ Fires.  I have read a few things on various discussion boards about increased battery consumption, and after contacting Amazon’s Customer Service it was resolved with either a few keystrokes or Amazon replaced the Fire with a new one.

You can always contact Amazon’s Kindle Customer Service: they are quite good.  To see a previous post on how to contact them, click here.

Because of the color screen, you will have the battery run down a lot faster than on an e-Ink Kindle.

One thing you might look at is the number of applications (apps) that are running before you contact the customer service department: for each app that is running, in addition to decreasing your Fire’s memory and dragging down the speed, if you have numerous apps running the battery will really start to drain (that’s true for a laptop computer running on the battery, smartphone, etc.).  To turn off apps that are running you are not using, while there are 101 ways to do it here is how I do it on my Fire HD10:

  • Open the menu bar by tapping the square icon from the home screen, which is located on the bottom center of your screen; it will be the third one on that bottom list of icons.
  • You will then see a list of apps that are currently running or “on” right now: they will pop up within their own mini window.  You may (or may not) be surprised at what is running.
  • To turn a particular app off, I tap the “X” of each of these mini windows.

I just did that for mine, and I was very surprised to see I had 23 open apps – search screens, email, games, weather, you name it!  I turned each of them off.

One other thing you may want to try is turn off your Wi-Fi: having the Wi-Fi on continuously drains the battery, especially if you lose your connection and the Fire is constantly searching for a new network to join.

Hope that helps!

Michael

About the Author:

USA Today bestselling author, Noree Cosper loves writing about magic in the modern world. While growing up in Texas she constantly searched for mystical elements in the mundane. She buried her nose in both fiction and books about Wicca, Religion, and Mythology. Everyday became an adventure as she joined a group of role-players, acting out her fantasies of vampires, demons, and monsters living in the world.

She embraced her nerdom wholeheartedly.

Noree grew, but never left her love for fantasy and horror. Her dreams pushed her and her hand itched to write the visions she saw. So, with her fingers on the keys, she did what her heart had been telling her to do since childhood. She wrote.

Book Description:

Kate Brandeis has it all: a famous reporter at the age of twenty-four, she’s the face of the Republic of the Americas. She has a loving fiancé and all the success she could wish for. But when she learns of the death of a long-forgotten friend, her investigations unravel her perfect memories, forcing her to face the fact that she’s been living a lie.

Jackson MacNamera, trained from a young age in the art of mind control, returns to the Republic for his mother’s funeral. Within a few hours of his arrival, authorities collect Jackson and take him by force to a room ironically called The Liberty Box, where he must choose between surrendering his thoughts to the new Republic, or fleeing for his freedom.

Kate, bereaved and confused, finds her way to a cave community of refugees, where Jackson seems to offer her an escape from her grief. The two forge an uneasy bond, and in the process Jackson learns that Kate has some insight which may help the hunters in their attempt to free other citizens from the tyranny of the Potentate. Against the expressed wishes of the Council, the hunters plot a series of daring raids, attempting to prove that not only is freedom possible, but that the citizens are not too far gone to desire it. But with the odds so stacked against them, can the refugees succeed in their rescue missions right under the Potentate’s nose?

Book Description:

Kidnapping. Murder. Grass-roots justice.

When her father is shot down on the street in front of his office, college journalism professor Sarabeth Bingham abandons the world of academia to take over the weekly newspaper he left behind, and she soon discovers that marijuana-growing has corrupted the idyllic little Kentucky town where she grew up.

In the same way selling booze during Prohibition built organized crime empires, the easy riches of dope-growing has bred evil and greed like a fly breeds maggots. Sarabeth’s own cousin grows weed. She even finds herself falling for a handsome bourbon distillery owner she’s convinced is financing his business with an illegal fortune.

But after a kidnapping and brutal murder rock the community, Sarabeth heeds the words on the plaque that has hung above her father’s desk for as long as she can remember: “Don’t mess with a man who buys ink by the barrel!” In a blazing front page editorial, Sarabeth declares war on the marijuana-growing industry. Now, the growers have to shut her up—fast, before she brings the feds down on them. And the meanest dog in the dope-growing junkyard knows just how to do it.

The fictional Home Grown is based on the real Cornbread Mafia, a criminal empire that sprung up in picturesque Marion County, Kentucky and grew into the largest illegal marijuana-growing operation in U.S. history. The novel is as tough, gritty and real as what actually happened to that little community because Ninie Hammon was the editor of the newspaper there, and was the target of intimidation, harassment and death threats when she broke the Cornbread Mafia story that made headlines all across America. Now, she’s turned that true story into a run-away-train fictional tale with neck-snapping twists and turns, ever-tightening suspense and an unforgettable ending that will have you flipping pages long into the night.

A Motive For Murder

Book Description:

MURDER AT THE BALLET: DANCE OF THE DANGLING CORPSE

They all seem murderous, but maybe they’re just hungry. Half the company chain-smokes to keep their weight down, and as tempers flare, you’d better watch who you say, “Break a leg!” to.

Recently retired Wall Street exec T.S. Hubbert and the flamboyant fashionista amateur sleuth who’s his Auntie Lil have solved three murders when Auntie Lil becomes the newest member of the Metropolitan Ballet’s board of directors. For weeks Auntie Lil has dragged T.S. to every dance performance in the city, and the season is about to peak with The Nutcracker when the promising ballerina whose scholarship Lil’s been sponsoring has her plum role snatched away.

The board is swayed by the box office appeal of a sixteen-year-old Hollywood heart-throb who wants to dance the role of the Nutcracker, and the boy’s manager father demands Lil’s protégé be replaced lest all the publicity go to her instead of his son. Although Auntie Lil’s is the only dissenting vote, apparently, she’s not the only one displeased with the board’s decision – the father’s body is discovered swinging from the rope of the First Act curtain at The Nutcracker’s Gala Opening.

Auntie Lil’s recent detective successes make her a natural to run damage control for the board by investigating the murder. In order to check out a couple of suspects, Lil takes her first ballet class in all her sprightly eighty-four years, along with her gentleman friend, Herbert Wong. Less suited to flying leaps than to flying leaps of imagination, it’s unlikely she’ll keep up the lessons, but Herbert is totally hooked.

Meanwhile, T.S. is making good use of his retirement by studying ballroom dancing to impress his lovely lady friend Lilah Cheswick, leaving Auntie Lil to do the heavy lifting on this one, while Theodore and Herbert keep sneaking off for dance lessons…and martinis. The entire crew of geriatric super sleuths has dance fever!

This witty and urbane amateur detective team recalls the cozy charm of Golden Age mysteries like those showcasing Miss Marple and her distinguished silver-haired colleague–Miss Silver, Miss Seeton, Mrs. Pollifax, and Jessica Fletcher.

Sol, too, finds himself drawn to Maddie. He knows nothing can happen, though. She’s Englisch, and he would have to leave his faith for her. That is something he cannot do.

But when the case takes a turn and they have to go on the run together, feelings become undeniable.

Can Maddie help Abigail when her own life is put in danger?

Will Sol’s faith be strong enough to protect them all?
