It’s time for another rambling blog post, where I just sit down and start beating on my computer keyboard with no set agenda…it has been a while, so who knows what I will come up with in this post? If you would like to write to me, my email address is michael at fkbt dot com (I type it out that way in a small attempt to thwart the spammers).
Texas Book Festival’s Lit Crawl
I didn’t know it until I read the online edition of the Houston Chronicle, but apparently this week is Literary Libations Week in Texas. Apparently, many restaurants and bars in Houston, San Antonio, Dallas, and Austin will be serving up cocktails with various literary names, with a portion of the proceeds donated to the Texas Book Festival. I wonder if anyone will create a Louis L’Amour cocktail ( I would imagine it would have rye whiskey as a major component)?
Last week, we concluded another giveaway of a new Kindle Paperwhite – congratulations to Dorothy in Utah, a longtime subscriber to the blog who was very excited to win: her new Paperwhite was delivered to her by the friendly folks at UPS on Friday.
Several of you have asked if there be another giveaway? Yes, I’m certain of it – I’m not sure what it will be, but stay tuned!
As many of you know, I enjoy baseball and have written about it several times in the past. I’ve received several emails, however, rubbing it in the Texas Rangers have had a stinker of a season. Yes, they have! After almost twenty years living in Houston, I haven’t followed them much this year as I’ve been busy with my day job (no, I don’t do this blog full time) and life in general. I also haven’t been following the Astros much, either, which is kind of pathetic considering (a) I live in Houston, and (b) they are doing well this year.
What does this have to do with a Kindle? Nothing! Unless you count watching the games on a Kindle Fire…..
…which leads me to video on a Kindle Fire. It has been hit or miss with some of the streaming channel apps (ESPN, FoxSports, CBS Sports, etc.) as they seem to stop and buffer all of the time. Before you Fire haters and iPad lovers chime in, the same thing happens on an iPad! It happens periodically to me no matter where I may be streaming – home, hotels, other connections – and it is a bit frustrating.
Speaking of video, that doesn’t seem to happen when I stream movies or TV episodes on my Fire. I’ve watched a lot of movies lately for “free” with Amazon Prime. I put the quotations around the word free as it really isn’t free, but I am enjoying many of the benefits. A good series I’ve been watching is the first season of The Man in the High Castle, but a bomb I watched over the weekend was Star Trek: Beyond (it was over the top unrealistic).
What I’m Reading
I’ve been reading quite a bit this summer – primarily science fiction with a few mysteries / thrillers thrown in to the mix. Most of the science fiction has been continuation of various military-based series by authors such as Jay Allen and Raymond Weil.
Anyway, that’s all I had for today – have a great rest of the week!
