Here is the book’s description from the Amazon website:
An acclaimed novelist goes back to his childhood growing up in supremacist-dominated Alabama in this non-fiction novel of the bloody Civil Rights Movement, a novel Kirkus Reviews calls ” … profound [and] unpredictable … An engrossing, heartbreakingly real novel of the South.”
In an Alabama town held captive under Jim Crow laws and ruled by the blind hatred of the KKK, free-spirited teenager Sonny Poe is heedless to the suppression of blacks in his town–until he witnesses a lynching in the midnight woods. Then everything in his life changes. This beautifully written novel pulsates in epic fashion with violence, betrayal, humor and love on a narrative transporting us into one of America’s most pressing historical moments before arriving at the story’s shocking and heartbreaking climax. Sonny befriends a progressive doctor who’s helping local blacks fight against police brutality in their community. The headstrong teenager commits himself wholly to Doctor Joe and his cause even as both suffer betrayals, beatings, arrest and finally exile in a story that can only end in tragedy–and hope. The Civil Rights Movement forms the backbone of The Sum of His Worth, but its strength comes from the lyrical voice of its young narrator, and its strongest theme lies in the caveats of moral reckoning in a free society.
Ron Argo, a prize-winning journalist and decorated war veteran, served as an army combat correspondent in Vietnam in 1969-70. He is the author of the widely acclaimed novel, Year of the Monkey (Simon & Schuster), a book painting a comprehensive and human canvas of the Vietnam War that applauded him with writing one of the best war novels of the last century. His other books include The Sum of His Worth, another historical novel that drops us off in Alabama in 1958 where an impoverished white boy finds meaning defending his black friend against the Ku Klux Klan. The Courage to Kill, first in the Ray Myers series of mystery thrillers, features the reporter bringing down a deranged serial killer, and his forthcoming novel, Baby Love (2015), second in the Myers series, is a ribald adventure/thriller involving the crime reporter on a deadly story into the activities of a syndicated baby-smuggling ring operating out of Baja California.
