This Week's Informal Poll – What Are You Reading on Your Kindle?

March 8, 2013 by Michael Gallagher 100 Comments

Each month since October 2009, I’ve started or participated in a monthly poll on the USA Amazon Kindle discussion boards asking people a simple question: what are you reading on your Kindle? This will mark the second month I’m not going to do it there but will be having it hosted here on the blog’s website as, after all, we need each of your input here on the blog!

I’ve received some great tips with past monthly polls, finding out what others are reading on their Kindle, and found some “new” authors I generally wouldn’t have found using my hunt-and-peck method. While I have certainly enjoyed the “mainstream” author suggestions over the past year, I’ve also enjoyed a lot of independent authors from each month’s poll I never would have heard of previously.

If you are reading this on your Kindle – or anywhere other than the blog’s website – and would like to check out the poll and find some new things or, better yet, tell others what you are reading, just click here or type in http://wp.me/p2b82w-48u into your web browser, scroll down to the bottom of the post, and start typing away in the comments section!

Here’s how this works – list a book you are currently reading or just recently read on your Kindle, whether you would recommend it, did you get it free, and anything else you would care to share.

I’ll start off this month’s poll by saying I am currently reading The Money Code: Become a Millionaire With the Ancient Jewish Code by H.W. Charles. I picked this up when it was free a couple of weeks ago, and it is back to its regular price of $4.99. I’m 89% of the way through it right now and so far I think it is pretty good and is provoking a lot of thought – I’m going to get my 8th grader to read it as it offers some good money management tips as well as practical advice on working hard and smart. This is a fairly quick read, but there is a lot of food for thought that I am stopping and thinking about – I think if you read it fast you will miss a lot. And, in answer to some of your questions out there, this isn’t a religious book but shows you specific passages in religious texts on financial matters.

You’ll certainly get more than $4.99 worth of value out of this one no matter what your religious affiliation is!

You can check it out if you click here.

Finally, here’s my standard continuation of each month’s request for prior participants in the poll: if you like or dislike a title you have read, in addition to telling us about it in this informal poll, how about writing a book review on the Amazon website? The review will certainly last and be visible a lot longer than this poll will. If you’re like me, you look at the customer reviews in order to see if you want to investigate a book further. Since we are all a little community here, and while I realize each review is each person’s opinion and we may not like the same thing, I know your friends and online discussion neighbors would appreciate your honest assessment of the likes and dislikes without providing a spoiler – I know I would! Your reviews don’t need to be a long dissertation of the book, I like to keep them short, sweet, and hopefully to the point (some people think I am too blunt on things I dislike, but I am at least giving you my honest opinion!); you can see all of the reviews I have written if you click here or type in http://smarturl.it/mgreviews – if you think any of them were helpful, I would appreciate a “Yes” vote just underneath the reviews on the Amazon website.

Anyway, that’s all for now. Have a great weekend!

Michael

Just finished "Blue Hole Back Home" by Joy Jordan-Lake. I'm sure I got it free (or nearly free) because I seldom pay for Kindle books 🙂 I enjoyed it thoroughly and even more so after finding out it was based on events from the author's past. It was a coming-of-age tale based in the mountains of N. Carolina.

I just finished book 4 in the "A Modern Witch" series by Deborah Geary. Its a fantastic series. The whole series is "feel good". I have the first three books as audio books, and books 4 and 5 as Kindle editions. No serious swearing, no descriptive sex, no church/organized religion, just lots of caring and love. going through normal life situations. Most just happen to be witches of the modern sort. They have web sites, one family runs an online video game with lots of levels for witches and nonwitches alike. Its a fun series, goes fast, and I've reread/re-listened to all of the first 4 books multiple times. The writing is outstanding, the characters well developed. In each book there is at least one scene so full of emotion that I cry: stress, asking for help, finding a way through the situation. It is set in Berekley, CA and Nova Scotia with time also in Colorado and Chicago. I highly recommend any and all books in this series.

I'm normally more into mysteries, thrillers, more serious fantasy, and just about any book I can get my hands on (or download). I found the first book in this series almost by accident and got hooked.

Am listening to Breech of Duty by J. A. Jance and just finished listening to Certain Prey by John Sandford. These I listen to on my tablet through OverDrive Media and OneClickdigital from my local library.
Am now reading The first book in the Zulu Kings Trilogy; The Zulu Kings: With Assegai and Shield by Penny Howcroft. I find this very interesting after being to South Africa in 2006 and reading The Covenant by James Michener years ago.

I'm starting Graveyard Special by James Lileks. He has a bit of a quirky sense of humor, and it takes place in an old-time diner, with the characters being the diner employees who work the graveyard shift.

I just finished Fire Storm by Mackenzie Dare. I really enjoyed it. It moved quickly and kept moving all the way to the end. It's the author's first novel, and that shows a little, but I believe she has a lot of potential. It is Christian fiction, with emphasis on the Christian, and she does not just sneak it in. It's throughout the book and very direct. If you don't want to read about the characters' religious beliefs, don't read it. If you don't mind that, I recommend that you give it a try. It's available on Amazon.com and doesn't cost much. I did get it free, but will pay for the sequel that she's working on.

I am reading WOOL 2 by Hugh Howey. Recently I found WOOL (the first book in the Wool series) through your new review blog. It was a good short story about a future dystopian underground society. They live in aa? 95 story deep underground silo because outside is poison. All their food, air, everything. .. is manufactured and gri wn in their silo world.
    I got Wool for $0.00.
WOOL2 through 5 are .99 to $2.99. Each book further explains how the people live without questioning how they got stuck living in a silo with the EARTH poisoned. There are years of books I read in my past like 1984 & Brazil. I'm enjoying it, easy reading.

My audiobook when I drive is CARRION COMFORT. This is by the famous Dan Simmons. Is about mind vampires. They control people to murder, rape, be rsped,, and this feeds them in they stay young longer. This book insinuates Hitler's was one. The assassination of Lee Harvey Oswald was controlled by such a vampire.

"War Brides" by Helen Bryan is a page turner. Back then, the women were more involved and affected in the war than they are today. It wasn't just the war, but the social ways and making do and the various personalities and economic issues as well as religious vertues that make this book. It should be very interesting. It was very hard to put the book down too. Enjoy!

I just recently finished reading "The Sound of Broken Glass" by Deborah Crombie. It was not free. This is the most recent book in Crombie's Duncan Kincaid/Gemma James series. I highly recommend the entire series (14 books). They are consistently good procedurals featuring a pair of Scotland Yard detectives who become life partners as well as work partners over the course of the series. Each book furthers their relationship and also features good solid detective stories. Crombie does an excellent job of weaving the past with the present and there's a lot of historical information and local color in the books. The entire series is strong. Of course, some books are better than others, but I recommend all of them, and in sequence if you can get them that way. All are available in e-format and a few are priced at $2.99 currently.i

At this moment, I am reading Unintended Consequences, and enjoying it. In one of your post, you stated that you hadn't heard of anyone "filling up" their Kindle……….Well, I just did yesterday, and found it rather frustrating. I have to admit, I "only" had 5,334 books in my library, but I really loved adding more books. I am disabled, and my Kindle is such fun. I had to call for "support" and learned how to move books to the Cloud part of my Kindle. Quite a "chore" for someone who has had major brain surgery, but I'm figuring it out. I do THANK YOU SO MUCH for ALL of the free books you have sent my way, now I must suffer "withdrawal" I guess!! 🙂 and JUST READ!!!

Just got quite a few books from the "85%" off category in the kindle store. Currently reading "Takeover" by Lisa Black (character driven mystery.) Have to also mention 2 of my personal favorite indie series that I probably NEVER would have discovered if not for our friend Mr. Gallagher! The Experiment in Terror series by Karina Halle – paranormal unique keep ya up til dawn reading. Its been a long time since I read a series where i had to remind myself these are not real people! Also the Harvest trilogy by Michael Hicks – sci fi with a new twist on the potential evils of technology. Eagerly awaiting the final book. In my experience, it has been a gift to discover a lot of lesser known authors by grabbing a free offering, and if I enjoy the book I am not shy about paying for future books. So thank you Michael and all the writers who give us readers a deal.

I read more than one book this week: The Final Arrangement by Annie Adams, In Deep Shitake by Patricia Mason and Snowbound by Blake Crouch. Like them so much I have passed them on to other family members.

Just finished Apocalypse. Island. A prime membership loan. A good paranormal thriller until the last 20% then it took a sci-fi twist. But well written enough I can Remember the different story lines, easy one evening read.

Like Karen, I got the first one by accident, before I was half-way through the first book I either downloaded the other free ones, or bought the rest of the series (8 in all.) I've read them at least 3X! Love them!!!

I read "story time" by Linell Jeppson not too long ago. It was sci fi which I don't care too much for but I liked the writer's style of writing so I am reading "onio " I got these 2 books free but would pay to read more by this author.

I'm reading World Without End by Ken Follett. I bought it because the book iis really big and hard for me to hold & read. This is the second book Follett has written about building cathedrals in England an life during the 14th century. I loved the first book Pillars of Salt that take place in the 12h century. Both are epic novels, both on New Yield best Sellars list. So if you love historical novels these books are must reads. Alot like weight on kindle to read! 🙂

Reading Nearly Departed in Deadwood, by Ann Charles, first book in the series and I got it for free. I have enjoyed the sense of humor while the heroine of the series is solving mysteries. So far it is clean and fun. I went ahead and purchased the next two for $.99 each and the last one for $3.99 each. I don't usually purchase an entire series (like, never) but this one was so good I did it Definately more for females, I think, but it is a fun series. (#2 is Optical Delusions in Deadwood, #3 is Dead Case in Deadwood, and #4 is Better Off Dead in Deadwood).
