Kindle Reset Instructions

January 2, 2013 by Michael Gallagher 10 Comments

I am going to set this message up to go out periodically for each of my blogs: if you’ve seen it before and know what I’m talking about, or if you’re just plain ‘ole tired of seeing it don’t worry – I’ll be back with a new post soon.

Don’t have a Kindle? Well, you should get one! They range in price from $69 – $499 depending upon the number of bells and whistles you get. You can click here to give the kind of Kindle I primarily use a look.

There seems to be a Kindle problem for a lot of folks who own an e-Ink Kindle – that is, what do you need to do if (a) this or any other blog or newspaper all of a sudden stops updating each day on the Kindle, and (b) you can see the blog or newspaper post in the to be downloaded list of the “Manage Your Kindle” section of the Amazon website and for some unexplained reason it doesn’t show up on your Kindle..

You will need to write this down, or try to memorize it, because if it happens to you I’m willing to bet you won’t remember unless you’ve reset your Kindle a few times!

If you would like to print this out, click here to read my post on the Free Kindle Books Plus a Few Other Tips blog to how to capture screen shots on your e-Ink Kindle.

If this happens to you, you will need to reboot your Kindle. Here is how you do it:

  1. Click the “Home” button to get back to your home screen.
  2. Click the “Menu” button, and select “Settings.”
  3. You will see several options, but “reboot” is not one of those options. Press the “Menu” button again.
  4. You will have several options, but choose and click the “Restart” button.

Once you do that, it will take about 1-2 minutes to reboot. Make sure your wireless is on, and the Kindle will go look in the Amazon store to see what is pending to be downloaded and viola! You should be back in business. If you ever need to restart your Kindle, I hope this helps!

Here is the book’s description from the Amazon website:

“In a woman’s life there are many tales of love. Only one of them is she actually living.”

THE FOURTH SUNRISE is the enduring, emotional story of Joel Murphy, a baseball player who meets the love of his life when the team bus breaks down in Delta, Colorado, during Deltarado Days. The country is embroiled in the Vietnam War, civil rights are at the forefront, and Joel wants to “make the show” and leap from the Dukes to the Dodgers. By chance, or by fate, Joel meets Christine in a diner and is smitten. Later that night, he sneaks out of the motel after the team curfew and he spends hours getting to know Christine, who is a beautiful and passionate girl. She is also a nice girl. By sunrise, he knows she’s The One. They part ways when he has to leave to finish out the season. Due to circumstances beyond their control, they cannot communicate. When Joel comes back for her, he discovers that she has married someone else and moved away. Then Joel gets drafted in the military. This is just the beginning of this unforgettable love story that spans decades…

THE FOURTH SUNRISE begins in the present day, as Joel Murphy waits at a coffee shop in Delta to meet Christine for the fourth time in his life, and an intriguing young woman joins him to wait for her date, too. As the hour grows late, Joel begins to tell his new friend about Christine, who he has seen only at Deltarado Days, and only three times over a period of decades. There is one important secret that he has kept from Christine, one that could tear them apart forever. As the hour grows even later, Joel’s heart needs a voice and he begins to spill all the secrets of his enduring and lifelong love for Christine.

Filled with poignant, tender romance and patient pursuit, THE FOURTH SUNRISE is an unforgettable story about destiny’s dealt hand in risking all that you are and all that you shall be, for your one true love…

The Judging by Ellen C. Maze has received an average user rating of 5 out of 5 stars based on 34 customer reviews.

Category: Horror

Here is the book’s description from the Amazon website:

What happens when you want to do the will of God but are cursed for all eternity?

Hungary, 1640. A village priest, enamored with his God and loyal to his sheep, awakens to find the village on fire. Searching for survivors, he is confronted by a dark creature with sharp teeth and red eyes. With the stab of the demon’s fangs, the priest is transformed from a servant of good to an unwilling agent of evil.

Present day. Four centuries pass, and Dr. Mark Corescu, that same village priest no longer recalls his origins. Corescu uses his position in the medical community to maintain a mortal façade as he pursues his true calling. Corescu seeks out evil men and women in a ritual he has dubbed the Judging. He condemns and kills them, one a night, feeding his lust on their blood. He feels neither guilt nor remorse. He believes he is serving a Higher Purpose.

Leave it to mortals Tony Agricola and Hope Brannen to do what they can to survive his attentions as the doctor struggles with his faulty theology. As Corescu’s perfect world is falling apart, Tony comes closest to showing the vampire the error of his ways. Still, just because his eyes are opened does not necessarily mean that his ways are easily changed.

Here is the Man’s Search for Meaning book description from the Amazon website:

Psychiatrist Viktor Frankl’s memoir has riveted generations of readers with its descriptions of life in Nazi death camps and its lessons for spiritual survival. Between 1942 and 1945 Frankl labored in four different camps, including Auschwitz, while his parents, brother, and pregnant wife perished. Based on his own experience and the experiences of others he treated later in his practice, Frankl argues that we cannot avoid suffering but we can choose how to cope with it, find meaning in it, and move forward with renewed purpose. Frankl’s theory-known as logotherapy, from the Greek word logos (“meaning”)-holds that our primary drive in life is not pleasure, as Freud maintained, but the discovery and pursuit of what we personally find meaningful.

At the time of Frankl’s death in 1997, Man’s Search for Meaning had sold more than 10 million copies in twenty-four languages. A 1991 reader survey for the Library of Congress that asked readers to name a “book that made a difference in your life” found Man’s Search for Meaning among the ten most influential books in America.

“This story was inspired by a case my husband handled. As a superior court judge he had to sentence a minor to life in prison. It made me wonder how I felt about minors arrested for violent crimes. Here is the book’s description from the Amazon website:

He came into this world with two distinctive qualities—an extraordinary vision and an indomitable spirit, but at the age of ten years old, R.J. Watkins was banished from his small Appalachian community after being unjustly accused of igniting a mining accident. With a little help from fellow riders of the rails, R.J. learned how to survive on his own, but eventually his train came to rest with the Benton and Walters Best Show in America, where R.J. cultivated his unusual talents.

At seventeen, R.J. answered another whistle call of destiny, and he met the powerful McClennan family. Like a dazzling display of fireworks to their fourth of July picnic, R.J. provided the perfect blend of flavor for their family that had long since grew stale. But when he had hard time adjusting to the lavish extremes of the East Coast high society, R.J. learned to navigate their foreign world by completely transforming himself. A metamorphosis so complete that within a few short years he was the talk of the town, a man he barely recognized. Still all the talk was for naught because with the closing bell on a single autumn day in 1929, the McClennan fortune, which took generations to amass, was gone.

To stop the head-on collision with destitution, McClennan’s eldest son, Cosmo, made a deal with a devil, but it fell upon R.J. to pay the dues. No longer able to afford the luxury of other’s opinions, R.J. shed his finer sensibilities and used every trick he learned along the way to save his new family. Will his efforts be enough or ultimately destroy them?

From majestic corners hidden deep within the mountains to New York City’s finest ballrooms, Catching the Westbound chronicles the triumphs and tragedies of R.J. Watkins, a boy who came from nothing but with unparalleled determination, will, and resilience became the last great pioneer of industry.

After a lifetime of traveling paths of decadence and despair, by grace alone, he discovered the road that would lead him home.

Organizing Your Kindle Books Into Collections

January 1, 2013 by Michael Gallagher 8 Comments

Over the past few years, I’ve posted this in some form or fashion a couple of times with the last time being in May 2012.  However, I’ve been asked about this topic many times over the last couple of weeks as we have a lot of new readers to this blog as well as people upgrading to new varieties of Kindles, so it’s obviously time to post this tip again.

Today’s post is rather long and is about the “Collections” feature, and is broken up into two parts. The first section is a general review of what a collection is and how to establish them on your new Kindle – which might be handy to those of you who have upgraded from any previous version of Kindle on the market except for the Kindle Fire.  Please note the Kindle Fire does not have the Collections feature at this time (although you can purchase an app to do that in the Amazon App Store if you click here).

The second section is for the experienced Kindlers who already know about Collections and want to transfer them over to a new Kindle.

Collections – A Basic Primer and “How To”

Background

Your Kindle can organize the books and other content you have on it in a file folder system called “Collections,” which if you are unfamiliar with it think of the file structure in the “My Documents” folder on your computer: you have your files organized by topic (or whatever system you may use). You can do the same with your eBooks. The following is a mixture from the Amazon customer service website and my own observations and experiences.

Creating Collections

If you store a lot of content on your Kindle, you can create collections to improve your organization. A collection is a category you create on your Kindle Home screen. You can then move your books and other reading material from the Home screen to the collections you create. Your Kindle will sort your content by collections after you create your first collection.  The following is how you do it on a Kindle Keyboard, but if you have a Paperwhite or regular Kindle the instructions are pretty much the same.

To create a collection:

  1. Select “Create New Collection” from the Home screen menu.
  2. Enter a name for the collection.
  3. Select “Save” with the 5-way controller when finished.

To rename or delete a collection:

  1. Highlight the collection name on the Home screen.
  2. Move the 5-way controller to the right to reveal the collection options.
  3. Select the desired action with the 5-way controller.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions.

Note: Deleting a collection from your Kindle does not change the content stored on your device. Items previously placed into the collection that are stored on your Kindle will appear on the Home screen after the collection is deleted.

To sort your Home screen content by collection:

  1. Move your cursor to the top of the Home screen to highlight “Showing All Items” and your current viewing option.
  2. Move the 5-way controller to the right to reveal available viewing options.
  3. Select “Collections” from the options.

Managing Content in Your Collections

After you create one or more collections you wish to use for organizing your Kindle’s content, you’re ready associate items on your Kindle with those collections. Here are a few handy collection features:

  • Collections are stored on Amazon: When you create a collection on a device, we’ll save your collection so it appears in Archived Items on other devices registered to your Amazon.com account. This allows you to transfer collections across registered Kindles.
  • Books are associated with collections until removed: If you add a book to a collection on your Kindle and then delete the book from your device, it remains associated with that collection in Archive Items. If you download the book again, it will automatically appear in the appropriate collection on your Home screen.
  • Books can appear in more than one collection: You can associate a single book or other item from your library with multiple collections if you wish.
  • Collections don’t change device or Archive Items content: If you delete a book from a collection or delete an entire collection from your Kindle, it does not change the actual items saved on your Kindle or in your Archive Items on Amazon. When you delete a collection from your Kindle, any downloaded items from that collection will appear the Home screen instead of in the collection.

To add or remove collection items:

  1. Highlight the collection name on the Home screen.
  2. Move the 5-way controller to the right to reveal the collection options.
  3. Select “Add/Remove Items” with the 5-way controller.
  4. Highlight and select a title you wish to add or remove. Items currently in the collection will display a check mark to the right of the title.
  5. Select “Done” at the bottom of the screen when you’ve finished editing your collection.

To import a collection from another Kindle:

  1. Select “Archived Items” from the Kindle Home screen.
  2. Select “Add Other Device Collections” from the Archived Items page.
  3. Select the desired collection to import and select “ok” to confirm.

Note: Importing a collection from another device does not import the books or other items to your Kindle if they aren’t downloaded already. However, books already on your Kindle that are associated with a collection will automatically appear under that collection name on your Home screen.

Removing or Reorganizing Content in a Collection

Maybe you would like to know how you can change books from one category to another, especially if you accidentally put one book in the wrong place. I’ve done that before a few times. While I am sure there are many ways to do this, here is how I corrected the problem and put the book where I originally intended:

  • Let’s assume you have 9 categories of collections, and you have one titled “Science Fiction” and another one titled “Westerns;” further assume you put a Science Fiction book in the Westerns category and you want to correct that error and put it in the Science Fiction category.
  • Press the “Home” button. Assuming you have your display to sort by collections, you should now see the list of categories you created for your Kindle’s unique collections, including the Science Fiction and Westerns category.
  • Open the Westerns category by highlighting it and then pressing down on the five-way controller.
  • In the Westerns category, you should see the problematic book you wanted to have in the Science Fiction category. Highlight it with the five-way controller and then move the five-way controller to the right (if you press all the way down on the five-way controller you will be instructing your Kindle to open the book to read). This should have several options available to you such as “Go to Last Page Read” and “Book Description;” my Kindle has 8 different selections.
  • The very first selection should be called “Add to Collection.” Choose this option by highlighting it with the five-way controller then press down on the five-way controller to select it and see the next screen.
  • This next screen should be all of your collections – from here, you can scroll up or down with your five-way controller. Scroll to the Science Fiction category, but don’t press anything yet.
  • If you have followed the instructions so far, the Science Fiction category should be highlighted and right under it in a black border with white letters will be an option called “add to this collection;” select this by pushing down on your five-way controller.
  • You should now see a checkmark to the right of this category, which means it is now included in the Science Fiction category collection.
  • You will also see a check mark in the category you didn’t want it in – the Western category; move your five-way controller to this line-item.
  • You should now have the Western category highlighted. Similar to the instructions just three bullets above, you will have a text box appear with “remove from this collection” as your option; choose this option by pressing down on the five-way controller.
  • Your book should now be removed from the Western category and only in the Science Fiction category.
  • You are finished. Press the “Home” key to get back to the home screen and get back to doing what you originally meant to do with your Kindle when you picked it up: read!

Transferring Existing Collections to Your New Kindle

One thing about collections – for example, you can transfer all of your collections from your K2 to your Kindle Keyboard without spending the hour or longer you initially took in setting it up. The following instructions assume you are moving from a Kindle 2 to what used to be known as a Kindle 3 (“K3”), but is now called a Kindle Keyboard; for reference purposes, for each place you see K2, think your old Kindle and K3 as the new Kindle..  These instructions should work for the latest generation of Kindles with the exception of the Kindle Fire.

There is a catch, and here is how you do it (If you already de-registered your previous Kindle, this will not work for you!):

  • Download the books individually to your new Kindle first. You can do that by either scrolling to the “Archived Items” on your K3’s book list and select them, or go to the “Manage Your Kindle” section from the Amazon website and select which books to transfer to your new Kindle. That’s going to be a pain in the neck as you can’t do a bulk transfer, but that’s what you have to do.
  • Once you have these books downloaded to your new Kindle – and it may take some time, depending upon your wireless connection speed – you can put the computer to the side and just use your Kindle, as the remaining steps are pretty easy.
  • Using your Kindle, press the “Home” screen.
  • Keep page turning until you get to the “Archived Items” line-item (it will be at the very end).
  • Select and open (by clicking the controller) the “Archived Items” line-item.
  • When you open this up, and regardless of how you sort the books by title or author, the first line-item on my Archived Items list in italics is Add Other Device Collections. Select this.
  • You will see a list of Kindles on your account that have collections on them. For example, my “old” K2 is listed here as well as my new K3; my two K1’s are not listed as the collections feature is not available for that model. Select the Kindle with the collections on them. For example, I selected my K2 and not my K3 as the collections I setup are on the K2 – I want to transfer them to the K3.
  • The K3 will think about it for a bit, and the collections will be on your new K3.
  • You’re done!

I didn’t transfer all of my books from the K2 to the K3. Why, you might ask? Well, I have a bad habit of grabbing a lot of the free books – upon further reflection, there were about a dozen I realized either (a) the content really wasn’t that appealing after all, or (b) I don’t have enough time to read a million or so books and never would get around to reading them.

Hope that helps!

Michael

Six FREE Kindle Books

January 1, 2013 by Michael Gallagher 7 Comments

Here are six FREE Kindle books for you in the Amazon Kindle store: as of this posting, each of the books was free on the Amazon website but please make sure you check the pricing before you smack the “buy” button as the pricing can (and does) change at any time!

Elephant Girl: A Human Story by Jane Devin has received an average user rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars based on 226 customer reviews.

Category: Biography

Here is the book’s description from the Amazon website:

Written in three distinct voices — child, teen and adult — Jane Devin takes readers on an intimate, imaginative and often harrowing life journey. Born unwanted and raised without love, the child-author invents a rich inner life to see her through years of trauma. Leaving home at 16, the teen-author struggles to find happiness and a sense of place in a world that feels confusing and unfamiliar. Then, years after stumbling into an adulthood mired in tragedy and broken dreams, the woman-author finds herself at a crossroads. The choice she ultimately makes is as stunning as it is brave.Told in unflinching and often lyrical prose, Elephant Girl goes beyond a singular life story to speak of powerful, universal truths and the ability of the human spirit to redeem itself.

In a culture of bootstraps and bromides, it has become unfashionable to talk about the long-term effects of child abuse and being raised without love or nurture. Unlike psychologist Harry Harlowe’s infamous experiments with monkeys and maternal deprivation — where all his subjects ended up abnormal or dead from what has been termed “emotional anorexia” — abused children are supposed to be more resilient. In fact, it’s a common belief that child abuse isn’t really that big of a deal and that abused children will eventually enter into adulthood with the same knowledge and tools as those who were not abused, or at least be able to gain them quickly and easily. Less acknowledged is the fact that there can be long-term and even lifelong physical, social and emotional consequences of child abuse. Oftentimes, the one affected doesn’t even realize what those consequences are until well into adulthood. High anxiety, hyper-vigilance, thwarted sexuality and brain damage that went undiagnosed until the age of 46 were just some of the after-effects experienced by the author of Elephant Girl: A Human Story.

The story of Precious ends with her teenage years. Jeannette Walls concludes Glass Castles as a college student. In A Child Called It, Dave Pelzer is removed from his abusive home by age 12 and eventually finds a loving foster family. In contrast, Elephant Girl: A Human Story is about what happens when there is no clear path to follow, no outside guidance and no dramatic rescue–when the only life-saving graces are imagination, self-determination and, ultimately, an undefeatable sense of hope.

This is not an easy story to read. Those who enjoy reading about miracles or quick solutions will surely be disappointed. Those looking to cast blame or buoy their belief that they could have survived better will find plenty of ammunition. However, those who are willing to see beyond the convenience and labels of bootstraps and bromides — who believe that human experiences are as diverse and complex as those who have them — will find much to relate to in this insightful and rarely told and ultimately hope-filled story.

Ripper.”

A junior associate in an Oregon law firm, Brad Miller is stunned by the death row revelations of convicted serial killer Clarence Little. Though Little accepts responsibility for a string of gruesome murders, he swears he was framed for one of them: the death of a teenaged babysitter who worked for then-governor Farrington.

Suddenly nowhere in America is safe for a small-time private eye and a fledgling lawyer who possess terrifying evidence that suggests the unthinkable: that someone at the very highest level of government, perhaps the president himself, is a cold and brutal killer.

5 FREE Kindle Books

January 1, 2013 by Michael Gallagher 23 Comments

Happy New Year, everyone!

Here are five FREE Kindle books for you in the Amazon Kindle store for your Christmas night: as of this posting, each of the books was free on the Amazon website but please make sure you check the pricing before you smack the “buy” button as the pricing can (and does) change at any time!

The 13th Enumeration by William Struse has received an average user rating of 5 out of 5 stars based on 11 customer reviews. I received a note from the author this book would be free through January 3rd.

Category: Mystery / Thriller

Here is the book’s description from the Amazon website:

In 43 AD, Levi ben Cheleph, a Roman customs official, composes a controversial genealogy of Jesus. For the next nineteen centuries, this list becomes one of the most disputed texts of the New Testament and the basis for one of the most important biblical secrets of all time. The 13th Enumeration is the key to that forgotten secret.

Darius Zaridast, CEO of Aquarius Elemental Solutions, is on a quest to destroy those he believes are responsible for the death of his father and the status of his homeland, Persia, as a third-world dictatorship ruled by religious fanatics. Darius finds evidence that this group, which he calls the Order, is also part of a centuries-old conspiracy to keep the secret of the 13th Enumeration. This secret, he learns, is their greatest fear because it is the key to information that could destroy them.

His research into this secretive group of people is compiled in a dossier he calls FILE-13. Darius believes some of history’s most influential men are somehow connected to the secret:

*Sir Isaac Newton, one of the most influential scientists of all time, spent a good portion of his life looking for a hidden biblical code.
*Charles Thomson, one of only two signers of the original Declaration of Independence, was responsible for the most notorious symbol in American history. This symbol, known by only a few, is a key to the secret.
*William Frishmuth, a German chemist and secret agent for Abraham Lincoln, was so valued for his services he was paid two hundred dollars from Abraham Lincoln’s private purse.
*William Colgate of Colgate/Palmolive, one of America’s early entrepreneurs, owned a building which featured an unsolved brick symbol–a symbol which today is known as the “American Da Vinci Code.” This cipher holds the key to the forgotten secret.
*Sir Robert Anderson, commissioner of Scotland Yard during the Ripper murders, almost discovered the secret.
*Benjamin Franklin, writer, inventor, philosopher, and statesman, may have been involved in guarding this ancient knowledge.

As Darius’s plot for revenge matures, he initiates the most devastating attack in the history of New York’s financial district. With Manhattan Island a ghost town, Darius uses the ensuing events to perpetrate the greatest financial manipulation of all time. Just when he has the world convinced he is its savior, Darius Zarindast destroys his entire corporate empire, causing the largest financial meltdown in history. He has finally realized his revenge. The only bitterness in his cup of retribution is his inability to solve the secret of the 13th Enumeration.

In this battlefield of revenge, conspiracy, and superstition, an archeological discovery is made in Capernaum, Israel–a discovery which will forever change the way the prophecies of the Bible are understood. Zane Harrison, a dig volunteer, and Rachael Neumann, daughter of the director of Israeli Antiquities, unwittingly stumble upon an incredible treasure of artifacts. Their find leads to the rediscovery of the 13th Enumeration. They soon learn their discovery is the key to a mathematical cipher found in the very first chapter of the New Testament, an ancient code which has profound implications regarding the status of Jesus Christ as the biblical Messiah. The unearthing of this ancient secret places them directly in the crosshairs of the Order. Will they be able to share their discovery with the world before the Order destroys the evidence and once again erases all knowledge of the 13th Enumeration from the pages of history?

The 13th Enumeration is a thrilling page-turner which weaves little-known historical and biblical facts into a plot that could have been taken from today’s headlines. The explosive conclusions of this story will leave the secular and Christian reader alike wondering if this is really a work of fiction–or the greatest discovery of our generation.

Raft People by M.L. Katz has received an average user rating of 4 out of 5 stars based on 29 customer reviews. I received a note from the author this book would be free for today only.

Category: Apocalyptic Fiction

Here is the book’s description from the Amazon website:

Before the Big Flood, Liz Green worried more about hiding detention notes, the activities of her rebellious friends, and mental illness than global climate change. She lives on the Texas Coastal Plain with her single mother, brilliant older brother, and socially awkward but clever younger brother. But now the water keeps rising, and her mother, Leah, has bigger problems than Liz. The suburban family, their neighbors, and billions of people all over the world are stuck between the rising seas and snarled land escape routes.

The military and authorities are overwhelmed by the scope of the disaster. The wealthy and well-connected rush to expensive sea habitats. Ordinary people cannot expect to get help in time.

You do not need to construct an actual raft to be Raft People, but you have to float. The family finds a website called “RaftPeople.com” which coordinates the efforts of ordinary people who plan to construct homemade crafts in order to float out of the disaster. They have to reply upon the natural talents of Liz’s younger brother, Mark, a middle aged former female special forces diver named Shirley, and an eighty year old retired naval engineer. This small group of neighbors decides to become Raft People to escape before their Houston suburb floods.

Overwhelmed and ill prepared, they must struggle against nature and gangs of hoodlums. The military may provide some help, but urban guerrillas have chosen to use this opportunity to take out the government, and the rebels do not seem to mind some collateral damage. Can this group of children, adults, and old people make it to the “Up Above” before the sea rises?

Liz Green narrates the story of Leah’s Folly, her Raft People craft, from the perspective of a young adult therapist, even though most events occurred when she was sixteen to seventeen years old. The story also includes one habitat dome, Constant, a refuge for the rich and powerful, naval rescue efforts, and some other Raft People crafts – Bayou Drink, Devil’s Island, Sisters of Mercy, Mighty Duck, and Moby Dick. The other rafts are similar to Leah’s Folly, but different too, as you may imagine from the craft’s names.

Raft People should appeal to adults, young adults, and mature teenagers. It falls into the category of post-apocalyptic fiction, but is also an adventure and coming of age story. There is even a bit of steam punk, science fiction, dystopian fiction, alternate history, spirituality, and the supernatural added to the mix.

Can Liz Green face her fears and travel back to Leah’s Folly and the time of the Big Flood in order to move on and help others?

Having survived careers in both the Army and the FBI, Ryan Archer is now content to live a quiet life in a tiny apartment above a surf shop in Santa Cruz, California. He has few possessions and few friends. He works part-time in the little shop downstairs, and spends most of his free hours out on the open water with just his board and the waves.
