900+ Free Kindle Mystery & Thriller Books

June 30, 2012 by Michael Gallagher

The post I had earlier this week spotlighting various free children & young adult genre books was so popular (you can see that post again if you click here or type http://bit.ly/LAPll5 in into your web browser), I decided to do it today with the mystery & thriller genre.

In addition to the four mystery & thriller novels listed below, you can always check out the shortcut links to the Amazon website I saved to see what free offers are listed on any day at any time vs. waiting on me to tell you about them: http://amzn.to/kindlemystery or http://amzn.to/kindlethriller – when I checked the link this morning, there were 866 free books in the mystery & thriller category

You may want to bookmark those links in your web browser (I have), but please make sure you check the pricing before you hit the buy button on the Amazon website as the pricing changes every hour – when you click the shortcut links above, the filter may not have had time to cull out the now “not free” books so be careful!

Here are the five free mystery & thriller Kindle books in no particular order:

Turing Evolved by David Kitson has received an average user rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars based on 106 customer reviews.  On a side note, I have read this one and I thought it was very good and I sure hope there is a sequel – if you would like to read the review I wrote for the book on the Amazon website, you can click here or type in http://amzn.to/KAMsU4 into your computer’s web browser – if you think it was helpful, I would appreciate a “Yes” vote on the Amazon web page!

Here is the book’s description from the Amazon website:

When Ex-DEMON pilot Jon Carlson meets beautiful humanitarian Rachel, it’s a match made in HEAVEN. Literally, because Rachel’s an ANGEL. She’s also an AI controlled android of immense power and capability. As Jon finds himself drawn into the world of these enigmatic creations of mankind, he unknowingly becomes involved in a program to create autonomous superweapons intended to fight the next war.

The Ghosts of Varner Creek by Michael Weems has received an average user rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars based on 216 customer reviews.

Here is the book’s description from the Amazon website:

Caution: Book contains adult content and themes. Reader discretion advised.

In the summer of 1909, in the small town of Varner Creek, Texas, twelve year old Solomon Mayfield awoke one morning to find his mother and sister had disappeared. Through a series of cover-ups and denials, some aimed at protecting Sol, others at hiding the worst of secrets, Sol lived the rest of his life in a fog of half-truths and shadowed lies, haunted by ghosts of the dead with whom he suddenly found himself sharing an inexplicable bond with that he could never fully understand. But when Sol passes away as an old man so many years later, the truth is waiting for him, as are the ghosts of his past. Sol finally discovers what really happened that summer and it is a truth that will change everything he thought he knew about the life he lived and the people he thought he knew. For as Sol is about to find out, even the dead have secrets.

Here is the book’s description from the Amazon website:

For Rose Gardner, working at the DMV on a Friday afternoon is bad even before she sees a vision of herself dead. She’s had plenty of visions, usually boring ones like someone’s toilet’s overflowed, but she’s never seen one of herself before. When her overbearing momma winds up murdered on her sofa instead, two things are certain: There isn’t enough hydrogen peroxide in the state of Arkansas to get that stain out, and Rose is the prime suspect.

Rose realizes she’s wasted twenty-four years of living and makes a list on the back of a Wal-Mart receipt: twenty-eight things she wants to accomplish before her vision comes true. She’s well on her way with the help of her next door neighbor Joe, who has no trouble teaching Rose the rules of drinking, but won’t help with number fifteen– do more with a man. Joe’s new to town, but it doesn’t take a vision for Rose to realize he’s got plenty secrets of his own.

Somebody thinks Rose has something they want and they’ll do anything to get it. Her house is broken into, someone else she knows is murdered, and suddenly, dying a virgin in the Fenton County jail isn’t her biggest worry after all.

Six Free Books from the Amazon Kindle Store

June 30, 2012 by Michael Gallagher

Here are six more free Kindle books for you from the Amazon Kindle store: as of this posting, each of the books was free on the Amazon website but please make sure you check the pricing before you smack the “buy” button as the pricing can (and does) change at any time!

Taming Clay by Raeann Blake has received an average user rating of 4 out of 5 stars based on 33 customer reviews.

Category: Romance

Here is the book’s description from the Amazon website:

Surly didn’t begin to describe Clay Cardell. A lifetime of experience taught him not to love and never to trust, but he desperately needed a business manager. What he got was a spunky, high-tempered woman who tilted his world more than a little off-center. But if he had learned anything in his life, it was to not expect her to stick around. You don’t trust a woman, any woman, to not just disappear.

Hailey Lambert just needed a shot. Montana was a long way from New Mexico and she just needed one chance to prove she could do the job. She was warned that Clay Cardell would not be the easiest man to work for. After their initial meeting she thought they might have understated that just a tad. The fact that her heart did some kind of somersault when she first saw him didn’t really concern her. If she could deal with the man’s attitude, she could certainly deal with some little physical reaction. Right? Well… maybe not.

Chihuahua Karma by Debby Rice has received a perfect 5 out of 5 stars based on 22 customer reviews.

Category: Contemporary Fiction

Here is the book’s description from the Amazon website:

Gregor’s nightmare was a cockroach. Cherry Paget’s is a Chihuahua.

Cherry was young, beautiful and rich—just golden enough to imagine that she had the world by the balls. Death was the furthest thing from her mind. But even a morbid obsession with the afterlife could not have prepared her for what happened.

Chihuahua Karma chronicles the horrendous consequences of Cherry’s bad choices. She trades love for a Black American Express card. She dumps veterinarian, Richard Preston, to marry gangster, Larry Finkelstein. And, when a smudge of magenta lipstick confirms that Larry is cheating she washes down a fist-full of Vicoden with a bottle of wine for breakfast. That mistake is the beginning of her problems.

In an inebriated attempt at tanning, Cherry plunges from the terrace of her penthouse to the street below. She escapes extinction only to encounter a more complicated fate. Cherry regains consciousness trapped inside the body of a very tiny dog.

Cherry’s diminutive prison is a mini Chi named Sugar. The Lucky Dream Dry Cleaners is her dismal new home. With the unwitting assistance of her former housekeeper, Cherry escapes the dirty clothes and cotton dust. Once again ensconced in Larry’s luxurious penthouse, she becomes his girlfriend’s prized purse-buddy.

In her diminished state, Cherry finds new perspective. She yearns for Richard. And she forms an unlikely alliance with Don Paco Fernandez, a temperamental ghost with a taste for tequila and pretty ladies. Through Don Paco, Cherry discovers that only she can save an orphaned child from her impending adoption by a sinister couple. The cast of off-beat characters collides, and Cherry meets her destiny at a casino night Christmas party.

Chihuahua Karma could easily share a shelf with humorous fiction like the Devil Wears Prada and the Nanny Diaries. Sugars fans include women who love fashion, passion and small dogs and any reader who enjoys unraveling a quirky plot to its surprising conclusion.

Debby Rice is a writer from Chicago. She has spent time in Mexico City, San Miguel Allende, New Orleans and San Francisco, and her experiences in those cities color her work. Rice blurs the distinctions between fantasy and reality and immerses her readers in a vividly imagined new world.

Generation by William Knoght has received an average user rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars based on 28 customer reviews.

Category: Horror

Here is the book’s description from the Amazon website:

The facts behind the fiction
In 2001 scientists isolated the gene for regenerating damaged organs from the DNA of a

South American flatworm. Within five years it had been spliced into the chromosomes

of a rhesus monkey, transported through the cell walls by a retro-virus denuded of its own genetic material.

Attempting to regrow impaired or elderly tissues, a scientist will one day modify the DNA

of human beings by injecting the gene-carrying virus. It is just a matter of time.

Before consenting to treatment, you may want to ask a simple question: could there be

a situation in which you would want to die but were unable to do so?

A crime-thriller with an injection of horror
Journalist Hendrix ‘Aitch’ Harrison links bodies stolen from a renowned forensic-research

lab to an influential drug company.

Aided by Sarah Wallace, a determined and beguiling entomologist, he delves into a

grisly world of clinical trials and a viral treatment beyond imagining.

But Aitch must battle more than his fear of technology to expose the macabre

fate of the drugged victims donated to scientific research.

The Grand Mirage by Darrell Delamaide has received an average user rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars based on 22 customer reviews.

Category: Historical Fiction

Here is the book’s description from the Amazon website:

A combination of Indiana Jones and James Bond, British agent Lord Richard Leighton must thwart the Kaiser’s plan to build the Baghdad Railway that would threaten Britain’s rule in India. He travels by caravan across the desert from Constantinople to accomplish his mission, defying the Young Turk regime, eluding a Prussian assassin, and forging an alliance with restive Bedouin tribes.

The year is 1910 and Europe’s imperial powers are on the threshold of war. New oil discoveries in the Middle East make this strategic region a bigger prize than ever. Leighton, a scholar in Arabic studies and a commissioned army officer, is torn between his devotion to a culture he has grown to love and his duty as an emissary of His Majesty’s government. He must also wrestle with his feelings for his former Armenian mistress when their paths cross again, rekindling the embers of their passion.

The Grand Mirage is a historical thriller that blends Wilbur Smith’s sense of rugged adventure, Eric Ambler’s taste for intrigue and Alan Furst’s period atmosphere to transport the reader back to an exotic Orient now lost to history.

Random Kindle Thoughts and Answers to Your Email Questions

June 29, 2012 by Michael Gallagher

I thought it time to answer a few questions I have received, ramble on while I’m typing for a while, and try not to stir up too much controversy today seeing as how we are baking here in Texas as I am sure many of you are across the globe.  If you would like to write to me, my email address is Michael at fkbooksandtips dot com (I type it out that way in a small effort to frustrate spammers).

Get a Free App, Amazon Gives You a $1 MP3 Certificate

Amazon has been running a promotion for most of this month, where they will give you a $1.00 MP3 credit just for downloading a free app from their app store.

That wasn’t a typo on my part: yes, if you download something for free, Amazon will give you a buck to be used for a purchase in their MP3 music store.  In other words, you can (a) get an app, and (b) get a new mp3 song – all for free.

If you’re going to choose a free app, you can always get this blog’s free app if you click here or type in http://amzn.to/freefireapp into your browser: you can use it on your Kindle Fire or any Android-enables smartphone or tablet computer.  Get it between now and the end of the day Saturday, and you will get the free mp3 credit in addition to a single place to go to be notified of the various free book offers (feeling like PT Barnum for a moment – it’s one heck of a deal!).

To visit the Amazon app store, you can click here or type in http://tinyurl.com/appdeal into your web browser.

Amazon also has free mp3 songs – you can click here or type in http://amzn.to/mp3tunes into your web browser to check them out (save this link as the songs change daily).  Clicking on that link right now, there are a couple of songs that are not free that have snuck into the list, so you can either re-sort it once you are on the page by “Price: Low to High” or just be careful of the pricing while you are browsing.

Kindle in a Bathtub Follow-Up

Last week, I had a post about using your Kindle while in the bathtub – you can click here or type in http://bit.ly/KRpKt2 into your web browser to read it again or in case you missed it – that generated a lot of responses: I left a lot of those comments at the bottom of that post, so click those links above to read what your fellow blog community had to say.

Most of the comments seemed to question my judgment / sanity, as they believe there is not enough electricity / juice in the Kindle to electrocute you in the event the Kindle does fall into the tub while you are in it; some people even said you were safe to lick the power terminals of the Kindle with your tongue and you would be ok (side note – I actually had that specific type of reply.  Nothing has ever made me want to stop what I was doing in my day to say “this seems like a great afternoon to go lick the electrical points on my Kindle.  Anyone want to come over and join me?”)

I will preface my next comment with the disclaimer I am not an electrician.  For all of you who said and emailed me it was perfectly ok to be in the tub while a powered-on Kindle was submerged with you, to each their own – but do you really want to test that theory with your life?

On another note, does anyone have any experience with the waterproof cover on the Amazon website?  Click here or type in http://amzn.to/kindlewater to see it, and shoot me a note or use the blog messaging interface to tell me the pros and cons – I could see a use for something like this around a swimming pool or a visit to the beach.

Big List of Free Book Links

On Monday, I had a post about all of the free children / young adult books available in the Amazon Kindle store, and highlighted several titles that were free for that day.  I had several people who had heard about it from their friends asking me where the post was – you can see it if you click here or type http://bit.ly/LAPll5 in into your web browser.  As I type up this post, there are a little over 800 free books in the children young adult category.

You’ll notice in that post I made an easy to remember shortcut link for you to go check it out at your leisure (well, it was easy for me to remember and hopefully you think the same).  The list of my larger list of free book shortcuts is one of the most popular pages of all-time on the blog – yes, I think they are easy to remember, also, but I recommend people bookmark them just in case – and I am frequently asked where that post is.  You can check out the complete list of shortcuts if you click here or type in http://bit.ly/MdgRVm into your web browser.

Giveaways

I’m frequently asked when the next giveaway of a Kindle Fire, etc. will be.  The short answer is “soon.”  In response to your answers to the survey I had a few weeks ago, I will be soliciting an independent author to sponsor the giveaway (i.e., buy the Fire) in return for promotion of their books to the blog members.  If and or when that sponsorship occurs, please take a moment to check out his or her works and maybe buy a book or two – if it works out for the sponsor by reaching new paying customers, I am hoping word of mouth will trickle down to the author community and we’ll have a line of folks wanting to giveaway all sorts of neat things to the readers of this blog.

I don’t know about you, but I do like free and I like the thought of being able to give away lots of Kindle Fires and other things!
Weather

This has nothing to do with your Kindle specifically, but it seems this summer here in the USA is going to be one we’ll remember for a while: fires in Colorado, flooding in Florida, record heat across the summer, and I still don’t believe the drought is officially over in most of Texas.  Wherever you are, I hope you are safe from these Acts of God and stay well-hydrated this summer!

Have a great weekend-

Michael Gallagher

I’m Listening With a Broken Ear by Vicky Kaseorg has received a perfect 5 out of 5 stars based on 57 customer reviews.

Category: Lifestyle & Home

Here is the book’s description from the Amazon website:

I’m Listening With a Broken Ear is a true story about a dying dog, Honeybun, the author found on a roadside and grudgingly rescued. A concomitant story of faith, persistence, and love unfolds as both she and her young daughter struggled to help Honeybun overcome severe issues of compromised health, aggression and fear. Untrained to deal with the overwhelming behavior, Vicky then tried to give her up…. unsuccessfully.
Refusing to relinquish her to Animal Control who would undoubtedly euthanize Honeybun,Vicky tripped upon a small rescue organization who offered to help rehabilitate Honeybun for free. During the many months of heartache and struggle, and multiple near deadly attacks on Vicky’s other dog, she discovered a modern day parable of the truth that nothing is truly irredeemable. Each victory with the little rescue dog taught personal lessons in redemption and grace, patience and perseverance, and the power of transforming love to spread through a community in most unexpected and unlikely ways.
There were multiple failures, and repeated surrenders to hopelessness. Each time, her weakness was thwarted and overcome by unexpected help and miracles. In the process, Vicky came face to snout with the harsh reality that real compassion involved action and responsibility. If she wanted to save the dog, ultimately it was up to her.
It is a story of redemption, physically and spiritually in a very small corner of the world, told through the story of a discarded dog that no one wanted and no one thought could be saved.
Donations to the animal rescue that helped save this dog can be made at hollowcreekfarm.org

Subculture by Charles Anthony Vilina has received an average user rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars based on 34 customer reviews.

Category: Mystery & Thrillers

Here is the book’s description from the Amazon website:

One boy is dead. Another is missing. And a Kentucky town lives in fear.

Enter the world of Subculture, a new thriller that blurs the lines between literary fiction and pure genre fiction entertainment. Novelist Charles Anthony Vilina has woven a character-driven tale of murder and suspicion that has readers talking both nationally and abroad.

A Kentucky community finds itself in shock and disbelief over the disappearance of two high school boys on a dark December night. Two months later, one boy’s body is unearthed on the farm of a reclusive and enigmatic girl, a foreigner of Asian descent. Her arrest and subsequent trial for murder forces this community, and the reader, to appraise their personal beliefs in the face of their deepest fears.

For readers looking for a riveting murder mystery, Subculture won’t disappoint. For those willing to read between the lines, this new novel dares to examine society’s best and worst attributes in the face of fear.

Tintagel – Free Science Fiction Book

June 29, 2012 by Michael Gallagher

Phoenix Publishing offers one free eBook each month in a variety of eBook formats, including the Kindle; I’ve picked up a couple of really good science fiction novels from them for free that they simultaneously have for sale in the Amazon Kindle store for prices up to $9.99. This month’s free pick is called Tintagel by Paul Cook, which you should be pleased to note while this book costs $4.61 in the Amazon Kindle website, you can get it for free if you follow these instructions:

  • Point your web browser to www.ppickings.com
  • Scroll down about one-third of the way on the right-hand side of the web page until you see Tintagel – this page is a little “busy” with lots of text and images.
  • Click on the “FREE EBOOK of the Month” text immediately under the book’s cover.
  • Your computer will next open up a new web browser, which asks you for a coupon code. The code for May is: 9991527
  • Once you type in the coupon code, click the “submit” button.
  • You have the option of signing up for their free eBook newsletter. That’s your choice (I obviously signed up), and you do not have to sign up in order to receive the free eBook.
  • Make your choice and click the appropriate button.
  • At the next screen, scroll all the way down where you have a choice in what eBook format you would like to receive the eBook; you want to choose the “Mobi” version as that is the one most compatible with your Kindle.
  • You will next have the option of opening or saving the file. Let’s choose “save” and make sure you save it to a location on your computer you will remember.
  • As a final step, you will need to transfer the eBook from your computer to your Kindle: that’s a fairly easy process. If you don’t know how to do that, you can click here or type in http://bit.ly/roKqao into your computer’s web browser to read my free guide on how to transfer content to your computer. This is the same guide I charge 99 cents for in the Amazon Kindle store, but you get it for free.

Here is the book’s description:

Music can be many things, but when it is used as a medium to spread a deadly virus that transports listeners to a deadly world of dreams, it threatens the future of humanity itself.

But not everyone is susceptible to the deadly virus and there is a group of ‘stalkers’ who are immune to its effects.

Francis Lanier is a stalker who can walk through the deadly dream worlds of others. He spends his time rescuing others from their dreams and races to find a final cure for this deadly infection.

Enjoy!

Michael

LadyBug POP Puzzle Game – Today’s Free App of the Day

June 29, 2012 by Michael Gallagher

Each day, Amazon offers a free Android App of the Day that could be a game, utility, or who knows?  Each deal lasts for just 24 hours and, after that period is over it goes back to paid status and a new app is the App of the Day.

In addition to your Kindle Fire, these apps will also work with your Android-based smartphones and tablet computers.

Today’s free App of the Day is LadyBug POP Puzzle Game and this game is normally $0.99 in the Amazon App Store.

Here is the app’s description from the Amazon App Store website:

It’s not that we have anything against ladybugs, but they’re just so fun to pop in the LadyBug Pop Puzzle Game. Jump ladybugs in this beautiful puzzler for your Android device or Kindle Fire.

Happy Popping

The objective is simple: jump ladybugs until you have no more ladybugs to jump. Once a ladybug is jumped, it pops and disappears. The objective is to have only one ladybug left at the end of the game, but that’s not easily done. Plan your jumps and see how few you can leave on the board.

Challenge your friends and family with LadyBug Pop, and see who leaves fewer bugs on the board. It’s a fun challenge for all ages. LadyBug POP offers 15 unique puzzles, and simply mastering one is hard enough. In addition to cheerful graphics, view the ratio of jumped to un-jumped ladybugs to the left of the game board. And rest well, no ladybugs are harmed during gameplay.

You can pick up your free copy of LadyBug POP Puzzle Game by clicking here or typing in http://tinyurl.com/appdeal into your computer’s web browser.

Download the Free Kindle Books and Tips blog app for your Kindle Fire or Android-based smartphone or tablet – for free, of course – by clicking here or type in http://amzn.to/freefireapp into your computer’s web browser from the Amazon App Store or click here or type in http://bit.ly/fkbtgoogle into your computer’s web browser for the Google App Store.
