Earth Shaker—a sensual, chilling take on Beauty and the Beast. An unscrupulous curator, Douglas Hackett and his beautiful associate, Naomi Slocum, discover the legendary Greek Minotaur Asterius, cocooned in a perpetual sleep. Imprisoned deep in a labyrinth by his father King Minos, this demi-god roamed through the darkness hungering for what gave him life. His violent rages were subdued only by the continued sacrifice of young maidens, especially those with crimson hair. After smuggling the completely intact body from Crete to D.C., it isn’t long before all hell breaks loose as Asterius comes to life. Deep below Hackett’s Museum of the Unnatural, Asterius is completely obsessed with Naomi and claims her as his beloved—destined to bear him a son. Naomi finds herself increasingly mesmerized by Asterius and his abilities as a “bone-waker”—a creature with a life force so strong—he can revive the dead. Naomi must choose between being truly human or succumbing to the beast within…. The depth of human passion sets this terrifying thriller apart from just another monster story. The relationship between Naomi and Asterius, while exploring her disturbing dark side, reveals the raw emotions of humanity. Naomi soon learns the importance in heeding those words: Rest in Peace.

Churchill & Roosevelt: The Alliance that Saved the Free World by Charles River Editors.

Category: History / Education

UK subscribers: you can pick up your free copy by clicking here or typing in http://amzn.to/JTbvQw into your computer’s web browser.

Here is the book’s description from the Amazon website:

*Includes pictures of Churchill, Roosevelt, and important people, places, and events in their lives.
*Includes full length biographies of both leaders woven together into one chronological narrative.
*Explores the personal and professional relationship between Churchill & Roosevelt.
*Includes a list of Churchill’s greatest quotes.
*Includes a Bibliography for further reading.

“I ask you to judge me by the enemies I have made.” – Franklin D. Roosevelt

“Winston Churchill led the life that many men would love to live. He survived 50 gunfights and drank 20,000 bottles of champagne…And of course, by resisting Hitler, he saved Europe and perhaps the world.” – Mark Riebling in “Churchill’s Finest Hour”.

One has been considered America’s greatest president of the 20th century. The other was voted the Greatest Briton of All Time by his own countrymen.

Winston Churchill led an astonishing life as a soldier, world statesman, historian and Noble Prize Laureate. When he died at 90 in 1965, one of the most important figures in modern history had left the stage. From providing some of the 20th century’s greatest soundbytes to successfully navigating Great Britain to victory in World War II against great odds, Churchill was at the forefront of global events for decades, becoming one of the most influential Britons in history. In 2002, he was named the Greatest Briton of All Time, and 40 years earlier he was the first person to be made an Honorary Citizen of the United States.

The tenacious Bulldog was joined in the war effort by Roosevelt, America’s most unique president if not the greatest. A well-connected relative of Theodore Roosevelt, FDR was groomed for greatness until he was struck down by polio. Nevertheless, he persevered, rising through New York politics to reach the White House just as the country faced its greatest challenge since the Civil War, beginning his presidency with one of the most iconic lines ever spoken during an inaugural address. For over a decade, President Roosevelt threw everything he had at the Great Depression, and then threw everything the country had at the Axis powers during World War II. Ultimately, he succumbed to illness in the middle of his fourth term, just before the Allies won the war.

Although the two men are remembered as the erstwhile leaders of the Allies in World War II, their up-and-down relationship directed the Allied war effort in North Africa, Sicily, and ultimately D-Day. Churchill & Roosevelt analyzes their relationship during the war, but it also covers the rise of both men to their respective positions as heads of state, weaving their stories together into one narrative. This book also humanizes Britain’s greatest Prime Minister and America’s ongest serving president, one who had to overcome a stutter to become his century’s most quotable speaker and the other who overcame polio to capture the presidency and defeat Depression and the Axis powers. Along with pictures of important people, places, and events in their lives, you will learn interesting facts about FDR and Churchill you never knew, and you will learn about the men who saved the free world like you never have before.

“Anywhere I see suffering, that is where I want to be, doing what I can.” – Diana

A lot of ink has been spilled covering the lives of history’s most influential figures, but how much of the forest is lost for the trees? In Charles River Editors’ British Legends series, readers can get caught up to speed on the lives of Great Britain’s most important men and women in the time it takes to finish a commute, while learning interesting facts long forgotten or never known.

Born in 1961, the woman who would become Princess of Wales and one of the most famous people in the world was literally nameless for a week. Expecting a boy, the parents finally came to grips with the fact that she was a girl and eventually named her Diana. Fittingly, even though Diana had been born into one of Britain’s most historic and prominent families, the world came to know her better for her first name than her last name, Spencer.

Diana’s first brush with Prince Charles came when the prince was dating her older sister, but the world met Lady Diana after Charles began courting her from 1980-1981. The two were married in the most famous and watched wedding of the 20th century, with nearly 750,000 tuning and over half a million standing outside to see the Royal Wedding. From then on, Diana became one of the most famous people in the world, with every step she took and every decision she made heavily scrutinized across the world. Though she stayed busy with international charities, human rights work, being a mother, and all of the necessities being part of the Royal Family required, Diana remained a tabloid fixture all the while.

Thanks to her fame, the life and tragic death of “Princess Di” are known the world over, and despite all of the controversies that swirled around her during her final years, Considered a saint by some and a traitor to the established order by others, Diana nevertheless remains one of the most famous and popular Britons in history. Ranked the 3rd Greatest Briton of All Time in a nationwide poll, Diana ranked ahead of icons like Isaac Newton and William Shakespeare, and she continues to be the standard by which all future women in the Royal Family will be judged. British Legends: The Life and Legacy of Diana, Princess of Wales details Diana’s life and career, including its famous ups and infamous downs, but it also humanizes her and intimately explores what Lady Di was like before Legend Di enveloped her legacy. Beyond the smoke and mirrors, here is the story of an extraordinary life.

Along with pictures of important people, places, and events in his life, you will learn about Diana like you never have before, in no time at all.

Clown Ball – Today’s Free App of the Day

May 31, 2012 by Michael Gallagher

Each day, Amazon offers a free Android App of the Day that could be a game, utility, or who knows?  Each deal lasts for just 24 hours and, after that period is over it goes back to paid status and a new app is the App of the Day.

In addition to your Kindle Fire, these apps will also work with your Android-based smartphones and tablet computers.

Today’s App of the Day is Clown Ball and this game is normally $0.99 in the Amazon App Store.  You can pick up your free copy by clicking here or typing in http://tinyurl.com/appdeal into your computer’s web browser.

Here is the app’s description from the Amazon App Store website:

The Naming – Today’s Kindle Daily Deal

May 31, 2012 by Michael Gallagher

The Kindle Daily Deal is a one-day only offer where a specific Kindle book has been hand-selected by the editors at Amazon and significantly discounted for today only.

Today’s Kindle Daily Deal is The Naming: The First Book of Pellinor, a children’s book by Alison Croggin, and is normally $3.49 in the Amazon Kindle Store but has been discounted to just $1.99 for today only.  It has received an average user rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars based on 76 customer reviews, and you can pick up your copy by clicking here or typing in http://amzn.to/kddeal into your computer’s web browser.

Here is the book’s description from the Amazon website:

Grade 7 Up–In this first volume in a projected quartet, Croggon has created a world that is both authentic and exotic, welcoming and frightening. When 16-year-old Maerad meets a man named Cadvan, she is catapulted from her life as a slave to an epic destiny. Cadvan is a Bard, one of the magically gifted Starpeople, and he begins to teach her about her own gifts and abilities. He believes her to be the prophesied One who will oppose the Nameless, the dark power working toward the destruction of the Bards and the Balance of the world. As Maerad and Cadvan travel, they join forces with Hem, a mysterious orphan, and learn that the Nameless’s influence reaches far into the world of the Bards. Encounters with great mythic figures of their world and threatening evil forces add to the epic flavor of their journey. Maerad’s story is presented as a translation of the great epic of a lost civilization, and explanatory appendixes add to this fantasy’s realistic feel. Maerad is a strong, bold, and appealing character, and her lack of knowledge about her world provides a framework for Croggan’s background explanations. Supporting characters, including the Bards and those who oppose them, are given realistic traits and flaws. While some coincidences in the plot may stretch readers’ belief, they are integral to the story. Maerad seems a kindred spirit to Tamora Pierce’s Alanna, and her story will find a welcoming audience among readers looking for a challenging and fully realized epic adventure.

After all, they deserve their day in court too, right?

When a young zombie walks into Hunter’s office accused of murder (by brain-eating), Hunter’s idealism is tested as never before as he struggles to secure the man’s freedom. Random Kindle Thoughts and Answers to Your Questions

May 30, 2012 by Michael Gallagher

Here’s another edition of the random blog post and a few answers to your questions…

Kindle Keyboard Giveaway

Tomorrow is the last day to sign up for the free Kindle Keyboard / Kindle 3, which I launched to promote the Kindle Books for a Buck (or Less) blog (you can click here or go to http://ebooksforabuck.wordpress.com to see this blog).  The Kindle Books for a Buck (or Less) blog was designed to promote the many independent, self-published authors that typically fall under the radar screen amidst all of the noise from the “headline” authors I have really enjoyed.  I think you will, also, and to me the purchase price of one dollar or less is a pretty easy price point vs. throwing down ten bucks or more for something untested.  Hopefully, many of you have had a chance to check out some of the offerings of this blog.

As I type this post, there are almost 12,500 entries so far in the giveaway.  You can enter once each day so if you haven’t signed up – or if you haven’t completed today’s entry – I encourage you to signup.  To enter, just click here or you can go to your computer’s web browser and type in http://wp.me/p2b82w-2F9 and enter away!

Good luck!

Rock and Roll Rip-Off Freebie

This morning, I posted about the Rock and Roll Rip-Off book being free – you can click here or type in http://bit.ly/JuseYM into your computer’s web browser in case you missed it or want to see it again.  I received a note that another book in the series, Rock and Roll Homicide, is also free from blog reader Penandra.  Thanks for the update, Penandra, and if you would like the next book in that series you can click here or type in http://amzn.to/M8619z into your computer’s web browser.

Collections Question

Earlier this month, I had a post about how to organize your Kindle books into collections – you can click here or type in http://bit.ly/MYnyjS into your computer’s web browser in case you missed it or want to see it again.  I received this note from William, as well as several other people along the same lines:

I can put books into collections, but the book also stays outside the collections. E.g., If I put “Rome” into the collection, “History,” then when I select History, Rome will show up. BUT Rome is also on the screen outside of the collection. How can I organize so the only thing on my home screen is the list of collections? And thanks for a great job on free books and tips!!

This happened to me when I first started organizing things into collections, and it drove me nuts until I was able to figure it out – I still had my collections shown on the Kindle, but I also had each and every book on my Kindle going on for page after page after page: all I wanted to see was the name of the collection!

It sounds like you need to just show all of your titles by collections: underneath the battery power status bar and the wireless signal bar of my Kindle Keyboard, yet above the first book or category name, your Kindle tells you how it is organizing your content.  Your options are (a) Most Recent First, (b) Title, (c) Author, and (d) Collections.  In order to arrange your books by the collection title(s) you have created, here is how you do it:

  • Click the Home button to go to the home screen.
  •  Using your five-way controller click the “up” portion of the five-way controller one time until the “Showing All…” items has been highlighted – this should be the line-item immediately below the battery power status bar and the wireless signal bar of your Kindle.
  • Right-click the five-way controller one time to display the sorting options mentioned in (a) – (d) above.
  • Move your five-way controller to the “Collections” option, and select it by pressing the middle portion of your five-way controller.

Assuming you have organized your books into collections, all of the categorized books should now be in their respective category and the collection name / category should be all you see with a number in parenthesis of each collection name to let you know how many titles are in each category.  If your Kindle is like mine, you will also have several books that haven’t been categorized yet immediately following all of the various Collections you have created.

Of course, you can use the same procedures to organize your content by author, etc.

Kindle Fire Stylus

I am looking to buy a stylus for my and my kids’ Kindle Fire, in the hope it will be a lot smoother – and less grimy – than my index finger.  Has anyone tried out the Amazon Basics’ Style (click here or type in http://amzn.to/firestylus into your computer’s web browser)?  If you have, and care to share the good and the bad before I drop $33 for three of them, I’d appreciate your thoughts – just use the comment form at the bottom of this post the blog’s web page.
Reader Survey

I’m almost done going through the results of the reader survey – while seeing the multiple choice answer results is fairly easy, what is taking me some time is reading (and hopefully understanding correctly) the additional comments many of you put in the narrative sections.  I’ll be sending out the results to each of you via a blog post over the weekend.  For those of you who took the time to share your thoughts, ideas, and suggestions I appreciate it!

Anyway, that’s all for now – I hope each of you have a great rest of the week!

Michael

Three Free Books from Amazon Kindle Store

May 30, 2012 by Michael Gallagher

Here are three free Kindle books for you this morning: as of this posting, each of these are free in the Amazon Kindle store but please make sure you check the pricing before you click the “buy” button on the Amazon website as the free status could change at any time.

Now, some of you may be saying “only three?!?”  Yep, but stay tuned later this morning for quite a few more in another post…

Rock & Roll Rip-Off by R.J. McDonnell has received an average user rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars based on 13 customer reviews.  I received a note from the author saying this book would be free through June 1st.

Category: Mystery / Thriller

Here is the book’s description from the Amazon website:

Jason Duffy thought he had accepted a routine burglary case when a career studio musician hired him to recover a memorabilia collection featuring unusual treasures from some of the top performers in the music industry. But Jason quickly finds himself at the top of a hit list that has nothing to do with The Top 40 and everything to do with a table for one at the San Diego Coroner’s Office.

While the facts of the case point to an emo band that the victim was helping at the time of the theft, the lethal force that Jason encounters in his investigation feels more like death metal. He finds himself imperiled by a hitman known as The Heartbreaker, due to his signature of shooting his victims through the heart at close range. With danger also threatening his staff and girlfriend, Jason must continue to mend fences with his retired police detective father, in spite of a recent riff that caused a major setback to their relationship.

Everyone thought The Tactile Tattoo was a “can’t miss” band. The pre-release buzz for their first CD was tremendous. But a bad review from a key industry critic, who didn’t care for their lyrics, left the album stillborn at record stores across the country.

The group soon learned that second chances in the current state of the music business are practically nonexistent. One band member discovered that money talks in an industry strapped for cash, and a bribe was entirely possible. However, funding that bribe meant getting involved with all of the wrong people.

In the midst of this action whodunit, the reader is treated to an insider’s view of the music industry that captures the new obstacles that today’s bands must overcome in order to succeed. Some musicians handle the pressures, opportunities, and disappointments more effectively than others. Some still succumb to the mesmerizing allure of sex and drugs and rock & roll.
