Here is the book’s description from the Amazon website:

Disgraced scholar Dennon Lark only wants to be left alone in his self-imposed exile—an exile that ends when a rebel army wielding impossible powers launches a series of brutal attacks across the Kingsland.

Torn from his isolation, Dennon is thrust back into the very work that sent him into hiding to begin with. His research into the kingdom’s lost history may hold the answers to a great many mysteries—like why so many people thought killed by the rebels later resurface fighting by their side. And only the King’s infamous warrior niece Bryndine Errynson and her company of female soldiers trust him enough to help him find the truth before the rebels burn the Kingsland to the ground.

Racing against time and pursued by forces beyond their understanding, Dennon and Bryndine may be the realm’s only hope. But in order to preserve the Kingsland’s future, they must first uncover its past.

TWO STRANGERS

Cameron Dawson’s got a past he can’t seem to shake, but he’s hoping to change that. He’s moved back home to Faith, New Mexico and taken a job as assistant sheriff. What he doesn’t realize is that his newest nightmare’s about to begin. Strange things are happening. People are disappearing, and for others, it’s far worse …

DISTANCE SEPARATES THEM

Miles away in Albuquerque, Kyle Bancroft’s life is spinning out of control. She’s seeing, hearing, and dreaming things she can’t explain: Flashbacks to World War II and an eerie hospital ward with locked doors, empty gurneys, and guttural screams. To make matters worse, a ghostly green-eyed girl is complicating her visions with an urgent message: Time is running out.

A DARK SECRET CONNECTS THEM

Kyle’s otherworldly encounters are driving her straight toward Faith … and right into Cameron’s life. The body count is rising, the pressure is mounting, and the clock is ticking as they rush to uncover a dangerous secret hiding just below the surface of this all-American town—one that’s threatening to destroy Faith and everyone in it. A secret they must hunt down quickly … even if it costs them their own lives.

A VOICE FROM THE GRAVE WILL DRAW THEM TOGETHER

His fellow trainees are other kids competing to prove their worth so they can graduate and contribute to the war effort.

Kindle Fire Price Lowered to $139 for Today Only!

March 29, 2012 by Michael Gallagher

A little over two weeks ago, I told you a refurbished Kindle Fire was being offered for just $169: that’s $30 off the price of a new one, came with the same one-year warranty as a new one and, from all reports, looked brand new.  A good friend of mine tells me (good morning, Beth!) you can’t tell they are refurbished which makes sense: these are probably units that were returned immediately after Christmas.

They’ve lowered the price again for today only – I am guessing Amazon wants to clear the rest of them out – to just $139 – until they run out.  That seems like a heck of a deal to me as the lowest price a used Kindle Fire is being sold for by individuals on the Amazon site is $152 (and they don’t come with a warranty).  The refurbished Fire’s also come with free two-day shipping.

You can check it out if you click here or type in http://amzn.to/refurbfire into your computer’s web browser.

Speaking of Kindle Fire’s, if you haven’t signed up for the Kindle Fire giveaway, you basically have until midnight EST Saturday to enter: as I type this post 1,276 of you have signed up.  Add your name to the giveaway as you could be the winner!

Have a great Thursday-

Michael

Millie’s Rose – Free from Amazon Kindle Store

March 29, 2012 by Michael Gallagher

Millie’s Rose by Donna Sturgeon is free today from the Amazon Kindle store, and has received a perfect 5 out of 5 stars based on 16 customer reviews.  You can pick up your free copy by clicking here or typing in http://amzn.to/H0q0oW into your computer’s web browser.

Category: Romance

Here is the book’s description from the Amazon website:

Who knew that love could flower within such guilty grief? Millie’s Rose is a heart-warming, romantic journey.

Sometimes, when a heart breaks, the damage is so severe the only way it can heal is to return it to the land where it was born. Knowing this, Millie Handley makes one request of her husband, Dan, when she discovers her cancer is terminal—to return home to Nebraska and build the house he’s been dreaming of since he was a little boy.
Two months after Millie’s funeral, Dan finds himself pulling up the rutted, dirt driveway that winds around the banks of Chelsea Lake, headed toward a desolate future he’s not sure he wants to survive. Unable to grieve and desperate to forget the life he lost, Dan locks himself in his great-grandfather’s cabin and allows the pain to consume him, like a grass fire burning out of control.
Stacy Ruzicka’s final promise to her best friend, Millie, was to help Dan through the pain, and she’s determined to do just that—whether he wants her to or not. Stacy and Dan have known each other longer than their memories reach back, and she knows him better than he knows himself, but the harder she tries to force Dan to rise from the depths of his grief and take that first breath of life again, the harder he pushes her away—until he’s suddenly pulling her into his arms and into his healing heart.

Whale Song – Free from Amazon Kindle Store

March 29, 2012 by Michael Gallagher

Whale Song: School Edition by Cheryl Kaye Tardif is free today from the Amazon Kindle store, and has received a perfect 5 out of 5 stars based on 85 customer reviews.  You can pick up your free copy by clicking here or typing in http://amzn.to/H30xI9 into your computer’s web browser.

Category: Education / Children

Here is the book’s description from the Amazon website:

Originally published in Canada in 2003 (but never distributed in the U.S.), this moving story features Sarah Richardson, whose family moves from the Montana countryside to Vancouver Island just as she’s about to enter sixth grade. Sarah soon finds that island life suits her perfectly–thanks, especially, to her new best friend, Goldie, whose Native American heritage Sarah finds fascinating, especially the wisdom passed to the girls from Goldie’s grandmother, Nana. Sarah is also intrigued to learn that her marine-biologist father shares a passion with her new Indian friends: killer whales, which the natives revere and her father studies. Life isn’t all native spirituality, however, as Sarah must confront a family tragedy that will change her life forever. Though overly melodramatic in places, Tardif’s story has that perennially crowd-pleasing combination of sweet and sad that so often propels popular commercial fiction, especially coming-of-age stories. Tardif, already a big hit in Canada, may soon be a name to reckon with south of the border.

Category: Mystery / Suspense

Here is the book’s description from the Amazon website:

For two hundred and twenty four years an eighteenth century desk has remained hidden in an attic southeast of London, England—that is, until now!

Despised shipping tycoon, Enrico Brosconni, is a mogul with an obsession, exceptionally rare antiques.
Christina Sheppard is a world renowned dealer out of Manhattan. Her photographic memory is as legendary as her ability to unlock the cleverly crafted compartments of the world’s greatest works.
And famed historian, Randolph Hancock, is about to make an incredulous claim: there are secret documents hidden inside the centuries old desk.
What all three have in common is a priceless antique, and the fact, that, their lives are about to change—forever!

Sealed Correspondence: a centuries old secret that could plunge an already disgruntled nation into chaos.

Yet Another Rambling Blog Post

March 28, 2012 by Michael Gallagher

Well, I felt a need to ramble here and there on a few topics with no set agenda…

Kindle Fire Giveaway

The response to the free Kindle Fire giveaway has been great!  In case you haven’t entered the giveaway yet, you can click here or type in http://wp.me/p2b82w-2sj into your computer’s web browser and enter the giveaway.

Here are a few clarifying responses to some of the questions I received today:

  • You have to enter by 12:01 a.m. EST Sunday.  To put that in the right perspective, I’d highly recommend you enter prior to midnight on Saturday night!
  • Yes, you have to be a member of Facebook to enter the giveaway.  Why?  Because part of the process of entering the giveaway is to “like” the blog’s Facebook page: Facebook will not let you “like” the page unless you are a Facebook member (membership to Facebook is free).
  • I will contact the winner after I get back from church Sunday afternoon.  Once I receive a response from the winner, I will let you know who won – no, I’m not going to post their full name and city (who needs a stalker in this day and age?).
  • Yes, this will be a brand new Kindle Fire!

Kindle Daily Deal

A lot of you ask me about the Kindle Daily Deal – what is it, how do you find it, etc.?

Here is the layman’s version of the Kindle Daily Deal – each day, and for one day only, Amazon significantly discounts a Kindle book, sometimes to 99 cents but sometimes slightly more and sometimes slightly less.  Many of these are from best-selling / popular authors, and you can get some real deals.

Unfortunately, I have no idea what is going to be on the daily deal until I hit the Amazon website.  You can check out each Kindle Daily Deal if you click here or type in http://amzn.to/kddeal into your computer’s web browser.

I’d recommend you bookmark that link and check it frequently – I’ve been forgetting to check out the Kindle Daily Deal of late, and need to get back into the habit!

This Blog’s Free App for the Kindle Fire

Today marks the one-week milestone of launching the free app in the Amazon App store.  For those of you who missed me talking about it in the blog, just click here, but here’s a summary of that post: while you can read this blog on your Kindle Fire, for some people it is a convoluted process (i.e., pain in the neck) to do it.

If you download the free app for your Kindle Fire – or any Android-enabled cell phone or tablet – you can read the blog posts in a web browser-type format, and when it says “click here” in the post you can click it and go immediately to the free book offering’s web page and initiate the download, or shop for something else in the Amazon store.

I’m way beyond shocked at the number of people who have downloaded the app to either their Kindle Fire, cell phone, or tablet – Once I reach a really large (to me, at least) milestone, I’ll give you some numbers on how many people have it installed.

The app is free – to check it out and download it (remember, it’s free), just click here or type in http://amzn.to/freefireapp into your computer’s web browser.

Future Blog Posts

Several of you have emailed me recently about the ability to borrow books for free and read them on your Kindle.  While I have posted about several ways to do that here and there, I just wanted to let you know I am working on a three-part post (or is it a series?) on instructions on how to do it.

I’ve written two of the three parts, but after being out of town for work most of last week, I’m finding myself stretched for time: let’s just say despite being an accountant in real life and dealing with math every day, I seem to be struggling recalling all of the formulas during my review of certain portions of middle-school math homework (and my child’s teacher really has a thing for piling on the number of homework problems).

In other words, I’m working on it and hope to have it completed soon!

Baseball

Did I mention I love baseball?  What does that have to do with the Kindle?  Absolutely nothing – I did preface this post by warning you this was a rambling post!

I will say there is something about spring, hearing the ball pop on a bat or in a glove, and smelling the leather of a broken-in baseball glove sure brings back a lot of memories…I really don’t watch much TV at all, but I am ready to watch!

I grew up near Dallas, and have been a Texas Ranger fan for almost 40 years: I even shared season tickets with a group of guys from work and went to a lot of games in the 90’s when I lived in Dallas, but the Texas heat – plus some fading pitching and the prairie wind coming in from the outfield – seemed to doom each season after the All-Star break.  Now that I live in Houston, there seems to be role-reversal between the Astros and the Rangers <sigh>.

Anyway, I am typing this post on Tuesday night for a noonish release on Wednesday – it’s late and I need to get to bed, so I’ll stop boring you for now!

Don’t forget to enter the giveaway for the Kindle Fire-

Michael

As I Die Lying – Free from Amazon Kindle Store

March 28, 2012 by Michael Gallagher

As I Die Lying by Scott Nicholson is free today from the Amazon Kindle store, and has received an average user rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars based on 29 customer reviews.  You can pick up your free copy by clicking here or typing in http://amzn.to/GXGspT into your computer’s web browser.

Category: Mystery & Thriller / Horror

Here is the book’s description from the Amazon website:

Richard’s life is a horror story. And it’s all the fault of that evil, soul-hopping spirit that took over his head. Or maybe the other four people in there.

Richard Coldiron journeys through a troubled childhood, where he meets his invisible friend, his other invisible friend…and then some who aren’t so friendly.

There’s Mister Milktoast, the protective punster; Little Hitler, who leers from the shadows; Loverboy, the lusty bastard; and Bookworm, who is thoughtful, introspective, and determined to solve the riddle of Richard’s disintegration into either madness or genius, and of course only makes things worse. They reside in the various rooms of his skull, a place known as the Bone House. And the people outside his head aren’t so comforting, either–little Sally, his hapless mother, his cruel dad, and a misfit teen named Virginia who also hears voices.

Richard keeps his cool despite the voices in his head, but he’s about to get a new tenant: the Insider, a malevolent soul-hopping spirit that may or may not be born from Richard’s nightmares and demands a co-writing credit and a little bit of foot-kissing dark worship.

Now Richard doesn’t know which voice to trust. The book’s been rejected 117 times. The people he loves keep turning up dead. And here comes the woman of his dreams.
