Sunday Evening Kindle Questions and Answers

July 31, 2011 by Michael Gallagher

In terms of the number of page views, yesterday’s email question and answer post just about set a record for a Saturday.  With that in mind, I decided to do it again – attached are various emails I have received lately.  If you would like to write to me, my email address is kindle at gagler dot com.

Earlier this week, I had a post about the new free game for your Kindle called Every Word: Crossings (it’s still free, click here or type in http://amzn.to/n6LwHS into your computer’s web browser to get it), and I talked about how the letters were rubbing off of my replacement K3, which I had to replace because I rubbed off a lot of the letters playing other games.

Several people wrote to me with a solution, but here is what Laurie from Tomball sent to me:

Hi Michael,

Got your post this morning re: every word.  This was the first game I ever got for my Kindle.  I was addicted to it and was worried about the letters rubbing off. I purchased a skin for it.  Real thin, with five pieces that cover the front and back.  Can’t remember the name but read about it on one of the discussion boards.  It even covers the glass screen so I can clean it if I get food or stuff on it.  It’s great! Problem solved.  The skin has its own letters on the keyboard part.  I thought for sure you’d heard about this one.

Laurie – I have heard of them.  Just do a search in the Amazon Kindle store of a “nokey skin” without the quotes to see a selection, or click here or type in http://amzn.to/nWTwBk into your computer’s web browser for an example.  As I type this, they are $11.95 in the Amazon Kindle store, which seems a lot cheaper than buying a new Kindle.

Regarding a post I had about two weeks ago about librarians possibly being upset with increased lending functionality being available with the Kindle, I received a lot of email; this one from Gina M. said it best:

I enjoy your blog tremendously; it was one of the first items I purchased when I was gifted my Kindle this past May.  I am a librarian, and I must tell you that librarians love the Kindle.  You are missing out on a lot of if you do not go into the library.  As my Kindle is new, I have not yet tried to download an MP3 audiobook file onto my Kindle (never thought of it until today’s blog article) but if you can download music, you certainly can download audiobooks from the free collection at the library.  Most libraries have extensive collections of digital offerings, and come the new year, Overdrive will be carrying Kindle-compatible e-book files. Overdrive Media Console is the software many library systems use to offer their digital collections. Therefore, Kindle users need to know that library materials will be available to them in the very near future.

As for upsetting librarians when they see your Kindle, libraries are well aware of the fact that they need to change with the times in order to remain relevant.  E-readers are the wave of the future, and libraries are finding more and more ways to serve their patrons in a digital world.  Mr. Gallagher, you should go to your local library and offer to teach a Kindle class. Your local library system could keep you busy for months, and it would be a great service to your community. The classes would be packed for an expert like you, and you would be helping libraries to remain the important source of free books they have always been.  And, due to publishers restricting the number of electronic copies of a book that a library can circulate at any given time, your blog will continue to remain important to librarians and all Kindle readers. :D.

Keep up the good work! My Kindle book collection is ever growing thanks to you!

God bless,

Gina M.

I will admit I have thought about conducting a Kindle class, primarily through the evening “Leisure Learning” courses offered in the Houston area; I have not thought of contacting a library directly, but I will give it a shot.  If I do hold a class, who will buy the first round for the after class experience?

Switching gears a little bit, I have received a lot of supportive email about my new blog, Kindle Books for a Buck (or Less).  I really did that one on a whim, to see if anyone would like it, in an effort to focus on the independent author: I can’t tell you how many independent authors I have found on the Kindle where the book was about a buck, and I enjoyed it more than I did the “brand name” authors.  Apparently, judging from the number of people who have tried out the free two-week subscription and then kept that subscription going on to a paid format, many of you like it, too.

I’ve already setup this week’s posts, and some of them are 99 cent books I have read and enjoyed, one of them I have read twice already it was that good; while each and every book I put on there may not be your cup of tea, I’d be willing to bet you will find several that you would like if you give it a shot.  If you would like to try out the free two week subscription, just click here or type in http://amzn.to/kb4abuck into your computer’s web browser.

And, finally, here’s a question from Natalie B.:

Thank you so much for your blog!  I enjoy reading the tips and have downloaded so many free (or nearly free) books and games thanks to you.

Here’s my question… I remember reading that you delete books from your Kindle when you’re done reading them.  I do not… yet.  Maybe when I have more!  I’d like, though, to return the book to the first page when I’m done reading instead of leaving it on the last page I read.  Is there a way to do that?

And a related question… is there a way to go back to the title page or table of contents without searching “table of contents”?

Thanks!
Natalie-

Thanks for the kind words, I appreciate it!

Going back to the beginning of the book is pretty straight-forward, and here is how you do it assuming you are at the end – or any other point – of a book:

  • Click the “Menu” button;
  • Press the middle of your five-way controller on the “Go To” menu option;
  • Move your five-way controller to the “beginning” option and select it.

You should now be at the beginning of the book.

Concerning your second question of getting back to the table of contents, it is the same series of steps:

  • Click the “Menu” button;
  • Press the middle of your five-way controller on the “Go To” menu option;
  • Move your five-way controller to the “table of contents” option and select it.

Note, however, on many eBooks there is not a table of contents; if there is not, the selection will be in a grey font vs. a solid black font.

I hope the above helps some of you!

Michael

Hello Kitty Must Die Free from Amazon Kindle Store

July 31, 2011 by Michael Gallagher

Hello Kitty Must Die by Angela S. Choi is free today from the Amazon Kindle store, and has received an average user rating of 4 out of 5 stars based on 14 customer reviews.  You can pick up your free copy by clicking here or typing in http://amzn.to/oVUMYZ into your computer’s web browser.

Here is the book’s description from the Amazon website:

Choi’s scorching-hot debut rips into the stereotype of Hello Kitties, young Asian-American women who are upwardly mobile, outwardly modern, but trapped by their families’ old-fashioned cultural expectations. A week before turning 28, Fiona Fi Yu, a San Francisco corporate lawyer who lives with her parents, uses a silicone device to take her own virginity, an act she soon regrets. When she consults Dr. Sean Killroy about restoring her hymen, the cosmetic surgeon turns out to be Sean Deacon, a former grade school classmate who once lit a girl’s hair on fire. Fi renews her friendship with Sean, who draws her into a secret world that’s empowering but also highly disturbing. As Sean encourages Fi to fight back when her parents suggest suitors, people who cause problems for Fi wind up dead. A demonic stir-fry of influences, including Amy Tan, Chuck Palahniuk, Clive Barker, and Candace Bushnell, infuses Choi’s prose with passionate ferocity.

Answering Kindle Questions

July 30, 2011 by Michael Gallagher

I thought I would use this post to answer a few questions people have about their Kindles.  If you would like to write to me, my email address is kindle at gagler dot com (I write it that way in a small attempt to thwart the spam machines).

The first question comes from Ann F.:

I have a kindle E-mail address, but where is it? How do I get to it?

This is a section of my Kindle book, “Kindle Tips, Tricks, and Shortcuts,” and here is what I had to say in that section:

You may already know, or maybe you don’t, each registered Kindle owner has their own unique youname@kindle.com email address, where you and others that you grant permission to beforehand can email material directly to your Kindle. This could come in handy for sending Word documents, etc. from work for the “gotta read it” on the plane, but you can also use it as a method to transfer books to your Kindle.

One word of caution, however: unless you are using the WiFi application vs. the 3G cellular, Amazon will charge the Kindle account holder for each document emailed; I am not putting the price in here as it has changed a few times since 2008 (and I have no idea what they are charging now). While these charges may not seem like much they can add up over time.

If you do not know your unique @kindle.com email address, it’s easy to find out: log into you Amazon.com account, and click on the “Manage your Kindle” link located at the top of the page. Underneath the “Your Kindle(s)” section will list each of the Kindles registered to your account as well as the unique @kindle.com email address to send material to each particular Kindle. If you do not like the email address assigned to you, experiment with it and find one you do like – the Amazon server will let you know if that unique @kindle.com email address is available to use.

I mentioned earlier you can have others you grant permission in advance to send material to your Kindle; if you scroll down on the same page that lists out your Kindle email addresses, you will also see the pre-authorized email addresses allowed. I would exercise caution with who you put on there, or the next thing you know your spouse or significant other will use that as a tool to send you reminders of chores to do, errands to run, or other emails!

Dear Michael,

I enjoy your blog Free Kindle Books and a Few Tips and Tricks and check it daily on my K3. I’d like to read it on my computer, but it doesn’t appear on my Kindle for PC software. I tried to choose to have it delivered to my computer using the option “Manage Your Kindle” to no avail. Do you know why that is? I only get your blog, so I can’t compare to see if it happens with all blogs.

Thanks for any advice on this!

Becky

Unfortunately for me (and you), Amazon does not allow blog subscriptions to be sent / read on the Kindle for PC application, or any other Kindle application except the actual Kindle.  I do think that is strange as they do allow newspapers and magazines to be read on the Kindle for PC application.  I, and other blog owners I have communicated with, have asked Amazon several times when that functionality will be programmed and made available – it seems like such an easy thing to program, and Amazon is missing a lot of incremental revenue – but they never really respond to us: maybe they will respond to the customer if you contact their Kindle customer service department.

Regardless if you contact them on the above (doubt it would do any good anyway), you may want to write down the following in case you do need to contact Amazon’s Kindle customer service department – they are pretty good at what they do when I have contact them. Here is how you can contact customer service:

  • Via the web at http://www.amazon.com/kindlesupport. I have used the click the button to call me a few times, and I am immediately called at the number I provided by a live human vs. a computer. I say “at the number I provided: as once I was on the road in a hotel room and they called me.
  • If you want to call them directly:
    • 1-866-321-8851 if you are in the USA.
    • 1-206-266-0927 if you are outside the USA
    • If you would like to email Amazon’s Kindle customer service team, just send an email to kindle-cs-support@amazon.com

I loaned a book to a friend.  The loan time expired and my friend returned my book.  I retrieved it from archived items and it never came back to my home list on my Kindle.  It is still listed as “on loan.”  I went to Manage My Kindle and re-delivered it to my Kindle.  it says it delivered it but it is nowhere to be seen.  I contacted Amazon and they are telling me to restart my Kindle.  But, if I restart my Kindle won’t I lose my collections?  Any other thoughts on how I can retrieve my loaned book?

Thanks.

Janet T.

Reading this email makes me feel bad – I have never loaned a Kindle book to anyone, which is a function of my family is all on one account: me, my wife, and our two children.  I think I need to expand my social circle!

In answer to the question above, restarting your Kindle will not make you lose your collections – I do it all the time, primarily because one of the 1,001 blogs I seem to subscribe to now and then as well as a few books gets hung up in never-never land.  Once I restart it, the stuff I am missing starts the download process – and my collections stay right where they are.

If you don’t know how to restart or reset your Kindle (it’s a lot like rebooting your computer when its performance degrades or it hangs), just click here or type in http://bit.ly/qFWN6U into your computer’s web browser to read my post on it.

I’ve noticed something about downloading books that seems to go counter to what you always say in your blogs.

Many times when you post links to books that you say must be downloaded to my computer and then transferred to my Kindle, I am able to click on the link from my Kindle… and as long as the book is in an acceptable format (AZW, MOBI), it downloads just fine straight to my Kindle.

Should I not be doing this?

Kaleb

Kaleb – there are many websites that allow that functionality, which is great for the Kindle owner.  I do it, also, from several websites.  If it works for you by doing it directly from the website straight to your Kindle by all means, keep driving on!  I publish the detailed instructions as there are many websites that don’t allow it or it won’t work, plus there are literally several thousand people who read the blog on their computer.

Another reason is even if people are reading the blog on their Kindle, the Kindle Internet surfing speed is slow in many parts of the country – it’s fast enough to download a book, but surfing the Internet from link to link can be like a 1200 baud modem vs. the cable Internet I have at home.  That’s why in addition to the “click here” links I provide for the free books I also put in the “or you can type in” reference to a web address: it’s faster, sometimes, to use the computer.

Regardless, I’m not going to say everyone has to do it a certain way: whatever works best for you.  It’s a lot like using Microsoft Excel: there are usually three or more ways to do the same thing, and everyone does it a little bit differently but gets to the same end result!

That’s all for now, and I hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Michael
