Free Music for Your Kindle

April 30, 2011 by Michael Gallagher

In addition to a lot of free books available for your Kindle, at any one point in time Amazon also has a couple of hundred songs and albums in mp3 format available for free.  The selection of free songs changes all of the time, with many artists you have heard of as well as many artists you may not have heard of and may not want to hear from again.

If you click here or type in http://amzn.to/koN4Ik into your computer’s web browser, you can see what I mean: I’ve sorted this list to start with the free songs in mp3 format.  You may want to bookmark this link (I have) and check it out from time to time.

What does this have to do with your Kindle?  Your Kindle can also play mp3 songs: you can listen to it via the Kindle’s speakers or insert your favorite headphones / earbuds into the Kindle and listen away.

I’ve posted about how to listen to music on your Kindle, and it is one of the most popular “tips” I have on the blog.  If you’re familiar with the process, you can stop reading now.  However, if you are not or need a refresher on how to do it, read on!

In addition to having your Kindle read to your with the test-to-speech option enabled, you can also listen to music. I don’t know about streaming music over the Internet – I haven’t personally tried it but who knows, it could happen if you had a real good connection – but I am talking about your favorite music in MP3 format. At this time, pending a future software upgrade, the Kindle only supports MP3’s for playback.

Here are some of the basics:

Music Location:

You will need to transfer your MP3 files over to your Kindle using the USB cord via your computer. If you haven’t changed the directory structure of your Kindle, you will see three folders: Audible, Documents, and Music. You want to put your MP3 files in the “Music” folder (I know some of you are saying “duh” right now, but some of you are not!).

If you want to organize your music by artist, for example making a folder for “Van Halen” and another for “George Strait,” you can make those folders. However, the Kindle does not allow (pending a software upgrade) you to navigate via the folders as you are selecting songs.

Playback:

From the Home screen, select Menu, then Experimental, then Play MP3. If you want to listen to the music while you are reading, just click the “Home” key and navigate to your book and start reading.

If you want to stop the music, just press the “ALT” and spacebar keys at the same time; the same is true if you want to start playing music again. If you’re tired of the song you’re listening to, just press the “F” key to move to the next song.

Speakers:

While you can listen to your music with the built-in speakers, they sound good to me for what I am using it for – mild background music while I read. However, if you like to have your music a little louder than other people prefer, or maybe traveling on a plane and don’t want to disturb the person 1.7 inches to your immediate left you can plug in headphones (click here or type in http://amzn.to/iMsxjD into your computer’s web browser for some options from the Kindle store). Headphones can be plugged into the audio jack located just to the side of your “on/off” switch on the top of your Kindle.

And who needs an iPod these days when you have your Kindle?

Dots and Boxes Game Free from Amazon Kindle Store

April 29, 2011 by Michael Gallagher

Dots and Boxes is a free game for your Kindle, and you can pick up your free copy of this game if you click here or type in http://amzn.to/k5DcCB into your computer’s web browser.

Here is the game description from the Amazon website:

The classic game of Dots and Boxes comes to Kindle!

In Dots and Boxes, you are presented with a set of dots in a 5×5 grid. One by one, each player must fill in a horizontal or vertical line between two dots. The player that completes a box by filling in the fourth side captures that box. Completing a box allows a player to immediately make another move. When all 16 boxes are claimed, the player with the most boxes wins.

Play against Kindle at Easy, Medium or Hard difficulty levels. You can also play against another person in Pass ‘n’ Play mode and select whether a match requires 2, 3 or 4 wins to complete. Dots and Boxes comes with tips and instructions to help you if you get stuck, and also tracks your best scores, wins, and ties for each difficulty level.

Team Secrets of the Navy Seals Free from Amazon Kindle Store

April 29, 2011 by Michael Gallagher

Team Secrets of the Navy Seals by Anonymous is free today from the Amazon Kindle store, and has received an average user rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars based on 9 customer reviews.  You can pick up your free copy by clicking here or typing in http://amzn.to/iUntx0 into your computer’s web browser.

Here is the book’s description from the Amazon website:

Team Secrets of the Navy SEALs is written especially for business professionals who want to make it in today’s extremely aggressive business environment. No force or unit has ever had more success than the SEALs. Author Robert Needham uses the lessons he’s learned as a Navy SEAL to guide the reader through the role of being or becoming a leader. “To some, leadership is
exemplified by the blind obedience to orders. It is a misconception that to coerce another person to do your bidding makes you a ‘leader.'”Navy SEALs are recognized around the world as being the best. From their start as Naval Combat Demolition Units (NCDU) in WWII to the founding of the SEALs in 1962, only 8,000 men have been allowed to join this top-notch unit. Needham is still on active duty as a SEAL and knows how to achieve results. “The ruthless effectiveness and efficiency of the SEAL Teams stems from the fact that we always start from, perfect, and practice the basics. The Team is a dynamic that
works toward success, not hindered by pride, preservation, and self-interest.”Needham’s principles define and illustrate the word “team,” and they will motivate business people working toward that common goal.

Buddy Holly Free Kindle Book

April 28, 2011 by Michael Gallagher

Here’s one that is a little different, and the reviews for it say it is more of a comedy: Buddy Holly is Alive and Well on Ganymede by Bradley Denton, which is free from the ManyBooks website.  You can pick up your free copy by clicking here or typing in http://bit.ly/lLVsQH into your computer’s web browser.

This one is not available inthe Amazon Kindle store, but the paperback version is listed for sale at $39.99 at Amazon.  Strange.

On the right-hand side of the web page you will see the download drop-down menu; you can see they have it formatted for
many of the eBook reader formats so make sure you choose the Kindle version. Once you download it to your computer, you will need to transfer it over to your Kindle – that’s a fairly easy process.  If you don’t know how to do that, you can click
here
to read my free guide on how to transfer content to your computer.  This is the same guide I charge 99 cents for in the Amazon Kindle store, but you get it for free.

While you’re at the ManyBooks website, you may want to check it out as they have thousands of books in the Kindle format.

Here is the book’s description from the ManyBooks website, but please be sure to read the reader reviews:

When televisions worldwide begin broadcasting a nonstop, noninterruptible live performance by Buddy Holly purporting to originate somewhere in the vicinity of Jupiter, Oliver Vale–the apparent object of the broadcasts–finds himself drafted for a mission so secret that even he is not sure of its purpose. (Campbell Award winner, 1992)

Blindsided Free from Amazon Kindle Store

April 27, 2011 by Michael Gallagher

Blindsided by Tolman Farrah Geffs is free today from the Amazon Kindle store, and you can pick up your free copy by clicking here or typing in http://amzn.to/jApEEy into your computer’s web browser.

Here is the book’s description from the book’s cover as, strangely, it is not in its “normal” place in the book description area of the Amazon website (I’m not too sure what to make of this book):

Iran will soon possess nuclear weapons. Considering that an estimated 12 million illegal aliens are within our borders and that narcotics are brought in by the tons, nuclear weapons can also be smuggled in. But sometimes the event that has not occurred is most telling. Each day brings more reports of suicide bombings in the Middle East; however, no Islamic religious or political leaders have martyred themselves. Obviously, they are in no great rush to meet Allah and thus face this dilemma: Should Iran use their nuclear arsenal, they will be annihilated by our multiple hydrogen-bomb armed ICBMs. Tragically, there is a solution to their dilemma: Used as energy sources, rather than weapons, nuclear devices can create man-made acts of God.
