A Reader Tip

September 30, 2010 by Michael Gallagher

Here’s a tip from blog reader Phil….thanks!

Howdy- I subscribe to your Trivia of the Day and Free Books blogs on my Kindle and like both of them a lot. Recently on the Free Books blog you gave some tips for the Kindle and asked readers for more. One of the tips you gave was to put the cursor beside a word and press the Return key to go the definition of the word in the dictionary. To that I can add this: When you’re on that definition page in the dictionary, press the Return key once more and you get a list of 25 words. The first word is the one you got the definition of, and it is followed by the next 24 words in the dictionary. This is a great way to find different forms of a word, and expressions that start with that word. Use the cursor to go up and down the list and press the 5-way to go to a word’s definition. Use the Next Page and Prev Page keys to go forward and back in the list.

First Things First Free Today from Amazon

September 30, 2010 by Michael Gallagher

I just flew in from another trip, and here’s another free book offered by Amazon…wow, that seems like 100 or so this week!  Seriously, not 100 but certainly more than we usually are able to receive for free.  First Things First by Brenda Warner is free today from the Amazon Kindle store, and has received an average user rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars based on 21 customer reviews.  You can pick up your free copy by clicking here.

Here is the book’s description from the Amazon website:

Kurt Warner is the two-time NFL MVP–winning quarterback of the Arizona Cardinals. Brenda Warner is an ex-Marine turned stay-at-home mom who collects coats for low-income kids and rocks babies to sleep at a hospital for chronically-ill infants. Together they’re the parents of seven, going into their 12th year of marriage, and founders of a foundation that helps disadvantaged children and families. Their formula for success? They put First Things First—family, faith, and giving to others—it’s their family motto, and it drives everything they do. First Things First is an honest, insightful, and entertaining look at life inside the Warner household. Kurt and Brenda speak candidly about their marriage, the values they are working to instill in their kids, things they’ve done right, mistakes they’ve made, the importance of giving back, and the legacy they hope to leave behind. Includes a 16-page full-color photo insert.

Enchanting the Lady Free Today from Amazon

September 29, 2010 by Michael Gallagher

Enchanting the Lady by Kathryne Kennedy is free today from the Amazon Kindle store, and has received an average user rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars based on 32 customer reviews.  You can pick up your free copy by clicking here.

Here is the book’s description from the Amazon website:

Little-noticed Felicity Seymour is a woman with a problem: she can’t take control of her parents’ lands until she can prove her magical abilities, of which she’s never had the slightest hint. When she meets a handsome were-lion baronet, Terence Blackwell, she’s surprised at his interest; what she doesn’t know is that Terence smells the taint of relic-magic on her, the same magic that killed his brother. Resolving to learn her secrets, Terence courts the worried wallflower and is as surprised as anyone when he falls head over heels. Soon after they marry in secret, Felicity discovers that people she’s trusted all her life are conspiring to steal her magic, her title and her land. Now she’s got to stop them with the help of her new husband—but how much does she really know about her mysterious mate? The latest from Kennedy (Beneath the Thirteen Moons) is simply delightful, set in a fantasy-touched Victorian England that’s imaginative, historically vigorous and ripe for further adventures. Felicity is a pleasantly unassuming heroine and is well matched in Terence, while the identity of the villain will keep readers guessing until the very end.

Raising Jake Free Today from Amazon

September 29, 2010 by Michael Gallagher

This has certainly been the week for free books from Amazon…

Raising Jake  by Charlie Carillo is free today from the Amazon Kindle store, and has received an average user rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars based on 79 customer reviews..  You can pick up your free copy by clicking here.  I bought and read this one about a year ago and thought it was pretty good (I should write more reviews, I know).

Here is the book’s description from the Amazon website:

In Charlie Carillo’s funny, insightful novel, a divorced man gets to know his seventeen-year-old son in a tale that rewrites the book on quality time together. . .

Sammy Sullivan is working his way down the ladder of success. Divorced and pushing fifty, his relationships have the longevity of a fruit fly. But how many men can get themselves fired and have their only son expelled from prep school all in one day? Now, after almost eighteen years, he and Jake may finally get to know each other. (That’s if his ex-wife–the super-achiever Sammy can only dream of being–doesn’t find out.) Jake knows virtually nothing about his roots. So, Sammy shows him the old neighborhood in the far reaches of Queens. But it’s been thirty years. The older woman Sammy lost his virginity to now uses a walker to get around. Most of his hangouts are long gone. It’s dreary, born-to-lose stuff. But Jake is on a mission. Wise beyond his (and his dad’s) years, he doesn’t want his father to miss out the second time around on the good things he blew the first time. And they’ve got a whole weekend together–a journey where Sammy will confront his, dysfunctional childhood and Jake will face a past he never knew he had.

This isn’t your typical father-son story–one is still growing up. The other is his son.

Elvis and the Dearly Departed Free Today from Amazon

September 29, 2010 by Michael Gallagher

Elvis and the Dearly Departed  by Peggy Webb is free today from the Amazon Kindle store, and has received an average user rating of 4 out of 5 stars based on 9 customer reviews..  You can pick up your free copy by clicking here.

Here is the book’s description from the Amazon website:

They say you can’t get to Heaven without passing through the Eternal Rest Funeral Home. And no one gets into Eternal Rest without passing muster with Elvis-the basset hound who’s convinced he’s the reincarnation of the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll. Brewing up a big ol’ pitcher of Mississippi mystery, Peggy Webb’s delightful new series is as intoxicating as the Delta breeze.

Normally, Callie Valentine Jones spends her days fixing up the hairdos of the dead, but when the corpse of local, prominent physician Dr. Leonard Laton goes missing, it’s bad for business. So Callie and her cousin Lovie (Eternal Rest’s resident wake caterer) have no choice but to go in hot pursuit of the recently embalmed, last seen bound for Vegas by way of downtown Tupelo.

In Vegas, Callie and Lovie hit the jackpot when they find the dearly departed inside a freezer owned by his showgirl mistress, Bubble Malone. But their luck runs out when Bubble decides to join her man in the afterlife. With the poisonous Laton family tree providing plenty of rotten suspects, Callie, along with some help from her basset hound, Elvis, is determined to crack this case-and have a killer singing “Jailhouse Rock” in time for her next haircutting appointment. . .

Accoording to Jane Free Today from Amazon

September 29, 2010 by Michael Gallagher

According to Jane  by Marilyn Brant is free today from the Amazon Kindle store, and has received an average user rating of 4 out of 5 stars based on 60 customer reviews..  You can pick up your free copy by clicking here.

Here is the book’s description from the Amazon website:

In Marilyn Brant’s smart, wildly inventive debut, one woman in search of herself receives advice from the ultimate expert in matters of the heart. . .

It begins one day in sophomore English class, just as Ellie Barnett’s teacher is assigning Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. From nowhere comes a quiet “tsk” of displeasure. The target: Sam Blaine, the cute bad boy who’s teasing Ellie mercilessly, just as he has since kindergarten. Entirely unbidden, as Jane might say, the author’s ghost has taken up residence in Ellie’s mind, and seems determined to stay there.

Jane’s wise and witty advice guides Ellie through the hell of adolescence and beyond, serving as the voice she trusts, usually far more than her own. Years and boyfriends come and go–sometimes a little too quickly, sometimes not nearly fast enough. But Jane’s counsel is constant, and on the subject of Sam, quite insistent. Stay away, Jane demands. He is your Mr. Wickham.

Still, everyone has something to learn about love–perhaps even Jane herself. And lately, the voice in Ellie’s head is being drowned out by another, urging her to look beyond everything she thought she knew and seek out her very own, very unexpected, happy ending. . .

Blog Page Popularity

September 28, 2010 by Michael Gallagher

One of the things I am able to do with my blog software is see what people click on, what are the most popular posts (in terms of page views), what search terms were used, etc.  No, for those of you thinking it, I cannot see your personal information!

The number of page views month-over-month have been increasing significantly, along the lines of 50% – 60% each month.  This doesn’t count the number of people who are subscribed to the blog via a Kindle subscription, which has been growing as well.  Seeing as how September will be ending any moment, I thought I would see what has been the most popular posts over the last quarter.

I was surprised by the results in some cases, not so much in others.  Excluding individual book titles over the last 3 months, here are the five most popular blog posts (defined as the most number of clicks / views) with a link to each in case you missed them.

Transferring Books to Your Kindle – click here

Actually, this one doesn’t surprise me as much; with the various free book offers from third party sites I have told you about, along with a link to this post on how to get those books from your computer to your Kindle, this one should be ranked fairly high.  The ironic thing is I put this one up as an eBook in the Amazon Kindle store on a whim at a sale price of 99 cents, just to see if anyone would purchase it (plus it only took about 20 minutes to do it) – I say it is ironic because it is a chapter in both my Free Kindle Books and How to Find Them and Kindle Tips, Tricks, and Shortcuts books, plus I post it as a blog post at least a few times per month and you get it for free.

If you haven’t bookmarked this post or printed it out, I suggest you do so now as one day you will be trolling around the Internet somewhere and see an eBook you want and download it to your computer.  When you do and are ready to read it on the Kindle, you won’t have to wait for the next time I post it!

Free Cookbooks – click here

This one surprised me.  When I posted the blog entry about a third party website offering 15 cookbooks for free, I didn’t think that many people would be interested.  I was wrong – I posted it in the middle of September and over 2,500 of you have hit that page in less than two weeks.  What’s for dinner tonight?

Check Out the New Kindle 3 Case – click here

This was a short post related to the new leather Kindle 3 case with a built-in LED light that draws power from your Kindle.  As a side note, this is the case I have for my new K3, and the light feature is pretty good – so far, I’ve used it for a couple of hours at a time on a plane and reading in a hotel room that didn’t have that great of a lighting scheme in the room, without a noticeable decrease in the Kindle’s battery.

Converting PDF Files to the Kindle Format – click here

Seeing as how the free cookbook post was #2, this one doesn’t surprise me – the cookbooks are all in PDF format.

Tricking Out a New or Existing Kindle – click here

I originally posted this list in January, then updated it in September due to the surge of new Kindle owners with the K3 release.  I’ll probably update it again a few times a year, the next time around Christmas when a lot of people will probably be opening up new Kindles as gifts (that makes me sound like one of the computer newspaper columnists who write about their wish list “tricked out” computer).  Who knows, Amazon may have yet a new version of the Kindle ready to go at Christmas – and no, I don’t have any inside scoop on that: it’s just a guess!

I’ll be back with a new free book offer soon!

Michael

Amazon Launches Kindle for the Web Application

September 28, 2010 by Michael Gallagher

Amazon just announced via a press release a new feature called Kindle for the web…very interesting!  Rather than try to summarize it (since I don’t know diddley squat about it except for what I read in the press release), here is the text of the press release as well as a link to the Kindle for web application:

Amazon.com (NASDAQ: AMZN) today introduced the beta version of “Kindle for the Web,” making it even easier for customers to discover new books and authors by sampling Kindle books directly through web browsers–no installation or downloading required. Amazon is also inviting bloggers and website owners who are participants in the Amazon Associates Program to be part of Kindle for the Web by embedding samples of Kindle books on their websites. These website owners will earn referral fees from Amazon when customers complete book purchases using the links on their websites. More information about Kindle for the Web and how to embed Kindle book samples is available at www.amazon.com/kindlefortheweb.

Customers simply click the “Read first chapter FREE” button on a book product page on Amazon or on other websites, and the first chapter will open within the web page. Customers can change the font size and line spacing, adjust the background color, and share their favorite books with friends and family via Facebook, Twitter, and e-mail–all without leaving the book in the browser.

“With Kindle for the Web, it’s easier than ever for customers to sample Kindle books – there’s no downloading or installation required,” said Dorothy Nicholls, Director, Amazon Kindle. “Kindle for the Web is also a great way for bloggers and authors to promote books on their websites by letting visitors read a chapter without leaving their site.”

To see examples of Kindle for the Web on authors’ websites, go to the blog of author Karen McQuestion at www.mcquestionablemusings.blogspot.com and the free sample of her bestselling Kindle book “A Scattered Life,” or the website of author John Miller at www.heymiller.com and the free sample of his book “The First Assassin.”

In the future, Kindle for the Web will include optimization for mobile browsers and other features. For more information about Kindle for the Web, including instructions on how to embed Kindle book samples, go to www.amazon.com/kindlefortheweb.
