The Irish Devil Free Tonight from Amazon

May 31, 2010 by Michael Gallagher

Here’s something a little steamier for your Memorial Day evening…The Irish Devil by Diane Whiteside is free today from the Amazon Kindle store, and has received an average user rating of 4 out of 5 stars based on 40 customer reviews.  You can pick up your free copy by clicking here.

Here is the book’s description from the Amazon website:

Raised in privilege, Viola is disinherited and ostracized when she is forced to marry a man far beneath her. Now a widow, Viola ekes out a living by taking in washing in a western mining town. On one of her rounds returning clean clothes to the local house of ill repute, she overhears the girls talking about the skills of William Donovan, a handsome Irishman well on his way to making a fortune. Stalked by a crazy suitor, and bereft after her small stash of money is stolen, Viola feels she has no choice but to sell her body. Instead of joining the local working girls, however, she approaches Donovan and asks to be his mistress. He is surprised but quickly takes her up on her offer, and what follows is a very interesting story related in prose so steamy that it fogs one’s reading glasses as Donovan, a student of the sensual arts, teaches Viola everything he knows, and then some.

Mary Monroe Book Free Today from Amazon

May 31, 2010 by Michael Gallagher

God Don’t Like Ugly by Mary Monroe is free today from the Amazon Kindle store, and has received an average user rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars based on 150 customer reviews.  You can pick up your free coy by clicking here.

Here is the book’s description from the Amazon website:

Annette Goode, born in the racist South of the 1950s, is the heroine of Monroe’s strong second novel (after The Upper Room), a coming-of-age journey depicted with wit, poignancy and bite. Up until 1963, when 13-year-old, overweight Annette Goode meets beautiful Rhoda Nelson, only daughter of the Richland, Ohio, town undertaker, Annette’s life has been a nightmare. After Annette’s father left her mother (Muh’Dear) for a white woman, Muh’Dear has scraped by as a domestic, stealing leftover food from her employers’ kitchens; Annette overeats to compensate for her father’s abandonment. Annette is only seven when she asks their boarder, Mr. Boatwright, to be her daddy. Soon after, he begins raping her. Annette, who considers herself fat and ugly, endures silently, thinking no one will believe her. She suffers the attacks for years until Rhoda befriends her and decides the man must be stopped. Monroe’s characters are well drawn, full-bodied and not all bad. Monroe paints sympathetic portraits of Judge Lawson, the honorable white man Muh’Dear works for; Mr. Nelson, the undertaker; Scary Mary, who runs a brothel but has a good heart; and Pee Wee, Annette’s young gay friend. However, it is the convincingly depicted friendship between Annette and Rhoda that drives the narrative and gives Annette the courage to end her abuse. In using a young girl’s innocent voice to narrate, Monroe recounts a tale of extreme hardship with a hopeful, uplifting tone.

Your Kindle is a Calculator in Disguise

May 31, 2010 by Michael Gallagher

I saw the following tip today on the Amazon discussion board – there is a calculator built into your Kindle (who woulda thought it?)  You can read the ongoing discussion if you Click Here, as new features of the calculator are being “discovered” as people are playing around with it.

Type in the main screen of the Kindle
2+2= after this press the Enter button (<-)

You can also type in t = 2*2 and press Enter.

A few other things it can do is basic math (plus, minus, multiplication, division, power (^) and square root (sqrt)), parenthesis , trigonometry (sin, cos, tan, atan), division by zero yields infinity result (∞)).

Make sure you press enter and do not click with the 5-way controller.

Kindle Software Upgrade Delayed

May 31, 2010 by Michael Gallagher

Well, today is May 31st, and I still don’t have my updated version 2.5 Kindle software.  While some of you may have it, my guess is most of you do not.

It has been delayed.

There is an announcement on the Amazon update page and if you read between the lines, as well as some rants on the Amazon Kindle discussion pages, it sounds like there may have been some bugs in the software.  Here is the “official” text from the Amazon update page:

We know Kindle customers are anxious to receive the 2.5 software update, so we wanted to provide you with some details about its status. We’ve rolled out the 2.5 software release to a set of Kindle customers and have received great feedback from these early customers. Based on this feedback, we are making some small adjustments to improve the experience further. We will be rolling out the 2.5 software update to more users over the coming weeks.

Oh well, guess I will just keep on reading!

Home to Italy Free Today from Amazon

May 30, 2010 by Michael Gallagher

Home to Italy by Peter Pezzelli is free today from the Amazon Kindle store, and has received an average user rating of 4 out of 5 stars based on 21 customer reviews.  You can pick up your free copy by clicking here.

Here is the book’s description from the author’s website (strangely, neither the Kindle nor paper version has a description on Amazon):

Sometimes you have to travel far to find your way back home…

After the death of his beloved wife, Anna, Peppi’s family and friends expect him to bury his grief by tending to his gardens and taking long rides on his bike. Instead, Peppi shocks them all with his decision to return to Villa San Giuseppe, the small Italian village where he spent his childhood, and to il mulino, his family’s old mill. But once he’s back, he temporarily moves into an apartment over the candy factory run by his childhood best friend, Luca. It is modest, but livable, with a lovely view of Luca’s neglected gardens and his equally neglected daughter, the fiery Lucrezia.

More a force of nature than a woman, Lucrezia’s legendary temper and workaholic schedule hide the very real pain she feels over her husband’s death years before. At first, she tolerates Peppi as an eccentric annoyance—her father’s strange but handsome American friend who fixes things around the factory and is bringing the gardens back to life. But soon, Lucrezia’s interest in Peppi deepens. Like a high wind, the gossip is flying through Villa San Giuseppe—Lucrezia’s making it to dinner on time. She’s eating olives from a man’s hand. She’s wearing heels. Now, under the warm Abruzzo sun, a tentative romance begins to bloom between the grieving pair, yielding to a surprisingly strong passion with the power to heal life’s wounds and promise second chances…

The Weekend Update and Random Thoughts

May 29, 2010 by Michael Gallagher

As I sit here this weekend, I have a couple of random thoughts I wanted to share (hey, you are my captive blog audience!):

Next Generation Kindle Coming Soon?

If you believe the folks over at Business Week, the next generation Kindle 3 will be released in August: click here to read the full article.

Here’s a couple of highlights on this rumor:

  • Thinner than the current version
  • A more responsive screen
  • Sharper picture

The article also speculated 3 million eBook readers were sold in 2009, with Amazon controlling about 60% (or about 1.8 million) of that market and an estimate 6 million eBook readers will be sold in 2010.

One hint I thought was interesting commented on Amazon’s previous purchase of a company called Touchco, which specializes in touch-screen technology.  Interesting….

Harry Potter Books Coming to Kindle?

Author J.K. Rowlong has long been opposed to digitizing her successful Harry potter franchise to the eBook format – I won’t go into all of the reasons but if you do a Bing search (click here) you can read some of her reasons.  If you read this article from The Book Seller website (click here), maybe that will change and she can realistically make another $100 million or so.

Amazon Removes Charge for Free Books for non-USA Customers

This one, to me, is pretty big – Amazon used to charge a wireless download fee (equivalent to about $2 in US currency) for its free book offerings if you are a Kindle owner and didn’t live in the USA; they would even charge it for books you happened to be reading on the Kindle for PC application.

That doesn’t really sound like free.

As I said in my lead-in to this section, Amazon “used to charge” this fee – they quit doing that this past week.  I think that’s great, and should lead to more market penetration and sales of Kindle titles across the globe.  Why do I think that is great?  The more purchasing power Kindle owners have, maybe it will apply more pressure to the publishers who are insisting on charging more than $9.99 for digitized books or, worse, those publishers who somehow are charging (don’t know if they are able to get it) as much or more than the paper version of the book for your Kindle copy.  Simple economics on the cost of the publication hurts my brain on that rationale.

Memorial Day Weekend

Monday is Memorial day here in the USA.  If you are a Kindle subscriber or web reader of my Trivia of the Day blog, I was planning on posting a special trivia article about the history of Memorial Day.  If you see a veteran while you are taking your holiday from work and about to enjoy a grilled burger or dog, or know of a family who has lost a family member while serving, please stop and thank them for their service.  We may not have it all right in our particular corner of the world, but at least we are free to complain and do something about things we don’t particularly like!

Have a great weekend!

Michael

Your Kindle is a Personal Trainer

May 29, 2010 by Michael Gallagher

Kindle owners do lots of things with their Kindles – some this you may already know how to do, but there may be a lot of you who never thought to do it.  There is a discussion thread going on over at the Amazon site where members are posting some of the random things they do with their Kindles in addition to “just” reading books.  I will be profiling some of these over the next few weeks – after all, part of the title line of this blog is supposed to be about Kindle tips vs. just a feature on free books!

I typed up a workout routine for the treadmill with times and settings and used it when I exercised.

Don Brown Book Free Again from Amazon

May 28, 2010 by Michael Gallagher

Treason by Don Brown was offered for free about 9 months or so ago, and quickly had a long run in the Top 10 of the Amazon Kindle bestseller list as well as its three other books in the series.  I read this book, as well as the other books in the series, and I must say I thoroughly enjoyed it and.  Amazon is offering book one in this series for free again, and you can pick up your free copy by clicking here.  This one could be free for months again or just a few days (who knows), so if you are interested in it I would suggest you get it now!

Here is the book’s description from the Amazon website:

The stakes are high . . . and the entire world is waiting for the verdict.

The Navy has uncovered a group of radical Islamic clerics who have infiltrated the Navy Chaplain Corps, inciting sailors and marines to acts of terrorism. And Lieutenant Zack Brewer has been chosen to prosecute them for treason and murder.

Only three years out of law school, Zack has already made a name for himself, winning the coveted Navy Commendation medal. Just coming off a high-profile win, this case will challenge the very core of Zack’s skills and his Christian beliefs—beliefs that could cost him the case and his career.

With Diane Colcernian, his staunchest rival, as assistant prosecutor, Zack takes on internationally acclaimed criminal defense lawyer Wells Levinson. And when Zack and Diane finally agree to put aside their animosity, it causes more problems than they realize.

Private by James Patterson Free from Amazon

May 28, 2010 by Michael Gallagher

Here’s something a little different – the Hachette Group is allowing the first 24 chapters of James Patterson’s new book, Private, to be offered for free; I have no idea how much of the book that is, or if it is a long introduction of some new series, but 24 chapters seems like a lot more than the standard “free sample” you can get on your Kindle in order to try a book out.  Unfortunately, they do not give a description of the book / sample / whatever it truly is on the Amazon website, but you can evaluate it yourself and get it if you click here.
