Zondervan Press has released another Phillip Yancey book, Grace Notes: April 1-30, which has received an average user rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars based on 13 customer reviews.  You can pick up your free copy by clicking here.

Here is the book’s description from the Amazon website:

‘There is no writer in the evangelical world that I admire and appreciate more.’ – Billy Graham Philip Yancey’s words—captured in his many bestselling books—have influenced the lives of millions of readers by strengthening their faith, building their hope, sparking their creativity, and challenging their comfort zones. If you’re one of those readers, you know personally how his insights have affected your mind and heart. And if you’re new to Yancey, you’re in for a life-altering experience. These meditations—all drawn from the beloved and bestselling writings of the author—will take you through an entire year of Yancey’s insight and imagination, covering a broad range of topics: * How to rediscover God through the wonders of nature, music, and romantic love * Why grace means you can’t do anything to make God love you more or less * What happens when you cut through preconceptions to encounter the ‘real’ Jesus * How to renew your understanding and practice of prayer * Where you can see God in unexpected people and places * How to cope when life crashes in around you Every day, experience the best from a beloved author who, with freshness, clarity, and energy, has so brilliantly articulated God’s wonderful but mysterious relationship with you. ‘

Free Book for Children Today

March 31, 2010 by Michael Gallagher

My son asked me for some money today because his school’s PTA, as part of a fundraiser, was having a book sale.  He wanted to buy some books (gotta love it, as he likes to read), so he went to his no-interest loan source (me), and combined with his allowance contribution came back home with two books.  He also bought one for his teacher as a gift for the classroom with his allowance money!

I led off this post with the above story as, in addition to my children, there are millions of other children out there who love to read.  I think they would be prime targets as Kindle owners or <gasp> owners of that new gadget called the iPad – that is, if the iPad didn’t cost a small fortune to own the stripped-down version – and if there were more children-type books available in an eBook format.  Sure, Amazon has a couple of thousand books listed in the children’s book category, I question if the count is correct – for example, the #1 book as I type this in the age 4-8 category is Bram Stoker’s classic book, Dracula.  I don’t think I would want a 5 year-old reading this book, nor do I think they would particularly understand it.

Economics 101 tells you publishers will provide content if there is adequate demand at a certain price point, and buyers will purchase an item if there is adequate supply at a certain price point.  With the Kindle’s and other eBook readers’ price points, I don’t know too many parents who will plunk down, say, $300 for an eBook reader for their children because of (a) the cost of the eBook reader, and (b) there is not very much children-appropriate content available.

Conversely, not too many publishers will make the investment to properly digitize a children’s book because there aren’t too many kids out there with their very own Kindle.

You can’t win for losing!

Anyway, enough of my rant and, maybe, I should help solve life’s children’s book riddle by telling you of a free children’s book available from our friends at Smashwords.  Brennan Haley’s book, Angel Star is available for free from Smashwords, and has received perfect 4 out of 4 star user rating based on four customer reviews.  You can pick up your free copy by clicking here or typing http://tinyurl.com/angstar into your web browser.  Just make sure you choose the “Kindle (.mobi)” format as that is specifically tailored for your Kindle!

If you need help transferring the book from your computer to your Kindle, click here to read my free guide.

Here is the book’s description from the Smashwords website:

The youngest and shortest swashbuckler ever is Jordan the Pirate. Can he and his crew rescue the poor Princess Wilamenia from the terrifying Oggley Boggley monster? The Angel Star is their only hope in this fast paced, humor filled adventure that is as short as it’s hero. There’s only 2221 words but each one counts for an instantly fun solution to twenty minutes of boredom. Just click and play.

Foreign Languages on Your Kindle

March 30, 2010 by Michael Gallagher

Kindle owners do lots of things with their Kindles – some this you may already know how to do, but there may be a lot of you who never thought to do it.  There is a discussion thread going on over at the Amazon site where members are posting some of the random things they do with their Kindles in addition to “just” reading books.  I will be profiling some of these over the next few weeks – after all, part of the title line of this blog is supposed to be about Kindle tips vs. just a feature on free books!

Here’s one of the tips from the discussion board:

For travel, I compiled a file of handy foreign phrases and loaded it on my Kindle.  This is one source for phrases: http://www.omniglot.com/language/phrases/index.htm

It has a bunch of useful phrases, plus this goofy one, which I’m looking forward to springing on someone: “My hovercraft is full of eels.”

The Super Sample is Back

March 29, 2010 by Michael Gallagher

In a previous post, I told you about the Super Sample Amazon offers from time to time (click here to read that post from early February).  After putting out half a dozen or so during February, Amazon seemed to stop the practice: I was surprised as, based upon the number of clicks from the blog, those super samples were very popular – it gave you more than the few pages Amazon will let you download as a free trial, which supposedly lets you make a better buying decision in the “try before you buy” scheme of things.

With that preamble out of the way, Amazon has what I term a super sample in the young adult genre for free available right now in the Kindle store with Rick Riordan’s The Kane Chronicles, Book One: The Red Pyramid Chapter Sneak Peek!  You can pick up your free copy of this super sample by clicking here.

Here is the book’s description from the Amazon website:

In this sneak peek first chapter download, get a first look at The Kane Chronicles, Book One: The Red Pyramid, a new series of adventures from Rick Riordan, author of the #1 New York Times best-selling Percy Jackson & the Olympians series. About the Book: Since their mother’s death, Carter and Sadie have become near strangers. While Sadie has lived with her grandparents in London, her brother has traveled the world with their father, the brilliant Egyptologist, Dr. Julius Kane. One night, Dr. Kane brings the siblings together for a “research experiment” at the British Museum, where he hopes to set things right for his family. Instead, he unleashes the Egyptian god Set, who banishes him to oblivion and forces the children to flee for their lives. Soon, Sadie and Carter discover that the gods of Egypt are waking, and the worst of them–Set–has his sights on the Kanes. To stop him, the siblings embark on a dangerous journey across the globe–a quest that brings them ever closer to the truth about their family, and their links to a secret order that has existed since the time of the pharaohs.

Check the Weather on Your Kindle

March 29, 2010 by Michael Gallagher

Kindle owners do lots of things with their Kindles – some this you may already know how to do, but there may be a lot of you who never thought to do it.  There is a discussion thread going on over at the Amazon site where members are posting some of the random things they do with their Kindles in addition to “just” reading books.  I will be profiling some of these over the next few weeks – after all, part of the title line of this blog is supposed to be about Kindle tips vs. just a feature on free books!

Here’s one of the tips, and is a feature I use quite often: “I’ve also looked up the weather radar on my Kindle when we’re traveling. This past weekend we were on the road, and knew a storm was coming our way. I looked up the radar on my Kindle, and saw that the storms were only about a county away. That gave us time to get to shelter (which was good, since we were in a tornado warning!). Luckily, no tornados. However, the Kindle is good in a pinch to look up weather, and also if your electricity goes off.”

So, how do you go about checking the weather on your Kindle?  Just follow these steps:

  • Make sure your Kindle’s wireless feature is turned on;
  • Press the Menu button;
  • Select the “Experimental” option;
  • Select the “Basic Web” option;
  • Press the Menu button again and then select the “Enter URL” option;
  • Type in mobile.weather.com and then press the enter button (which looks like an arrow pointing to the left) on your Kindle’s keyboard.

You can then input your location by ZIP code, city name, airport code, or you can select from a drop-down menu from various large cities.  Why not take a look and see what the weather holds for your neighborhood or travel destination?

Science Fiction Title Free Today

March 28, 2010 by Michael Gallagher

As many of you know, I love science fiction.  Baen has one that usually costs $6.00 on their site for free today in the Kindle format that has received 4.5 out of 5 stars based on 13 customer reviews called the Northworld Trilogy by David Drake.  You can pick up your free copy by clicking here but make sure you choose the Kindle version!

I have previously posted on how to have the Baen server email a book to Amazon, which will then send it wirelessly to your Kindle: click here to see those instructions again.  If you would rather download the book to your computer and transfer it to your Kindle and need a little instruction on how to do it, click here.

Here is the book’s description from the Baen website:

The inhuman Rulers of the galaxy sent three fleets to learn what had happened to the world located by Captain North and the Survey Team he led. Neither a soul nor a message returned. The fourth time, the Rulers sent a single man: Nils Hansen.

Commissioner Hansen had a mind that saw the shortest path to each task’s completion and a ruthless determination to do what the task required. The cost – to himself and whoever happened to be in the way – didn’t matter. Hanson’s Special Units had kept his planet safe from the most sophisticated and violent criminals in the galaxy. Now Hansen was being sent to penetrate a spacetime enigma which had made gods or demons of the first humans to discover it. He would succeed or die.

Northworld: a place of slashing violence and mystic transformation
Northworld: a place of treachery and dazzling beauty
Northworld: a place of honor, of faith, and of love.

Hansen’s iron will and strong arm confront godlike power and godlike cunning while a galaxy trembles for the outcome. And if Hansen dies – he will not die alone!

Praise for The Northworld Trilogy:

“Down and dirty . . . this one blazes!” — Los Angeles Daily News

“Fast-paced adventure with convincing depth!”
—Publishers Weekly

“Good military SF . . . the action is fast and the tension is high!”
— Locus

” Northworld is that rare work-a novel that works on more than one level. A stunning tapestry . . . highly recommended!” — The SFRA Newsletter

Two Free Books from Amazon This Morning

March 28, 2010 by Michael Gallagher

There are two books for free in the Christian fiction section of Amazon’s Kindle store – if you are an owner of Barnes & Nobles’ nook, these books would cost you $9.89 each to read.  If you are interested in them, grab them now as there is no telling how long they will be available for free from Amazon.  Rather than send out a separate post dedicated to each book, I’m going to first give you the link to go get the books, then follow it with a brief description of each book.

First up is A Gift of Grace by Amy Clipton.  It has received an average rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars based on 23 customer reviews.  You can pick up your free copy by clicking here.

The second book is The Homeplace by Gilbert Morris.It has received an average rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars based on 5 customer reviews.  You can pick up your free copy by clicking here.

Here is a synopsis of A Gift of Grace:

Rebecca Kauffman’s tranquil Old Order Amish life is transformed when she suddenly has custody of her two teenage nieces after her “”English”” sister and brother-in-law are killed in an automobile accident. Instant motherhood, after years of unsuccessful attempts to conceive a child of her own, is both a joy and a heartache. Rebecca struggles to give the teenage girls the guidance they need as well as fulfill her duties to Daniel as an Amish wife. Rebellious Jessica is … more »resistant to Amish ways and constantly in trouble with the community. Younger sister Lindsay is caught in the middle, and the strain between Rebecca and Daniel mounts as Jessica’s rebellion escalates. Instead of the beautiful family life she dreamed of creating for her nieces, Rebecca feels as if her world is being torn apart by two different cultures, leaving her to question her place in the Amish community, her marriage, and her faith in God.

Here is a synopsis of The Homeplace:

As the year 1928 begins, fourteen-year-old Lanie Belle Freeman of Fairhope, Arkansas, has bright hopes for the future. Her father has launched a new business, and her mother is expecting her fifth baby. Lanie has dreams of going to college and being a writer.

Then tragedy strikes.

First Lanie’s mother dies giving birth to the baby, and Lanie must assume the role of surrogate mother to her younger siblings. Then her father is falsely accused of murder—and convicted! With their father in prison, Lanie and her brothers and sisters do all they can to keep the family together, and hold on to their home.

In the face of a world shaken by the Great Depression, this young family finds salvation and encouragement in faith, family, and the tight-knit community of Fairhope. With warmth and an unflagging sense of humor, Lanie leads her siblings into a future that, against all odds, holds the promise of hope and love. Book One in the Fairhope Series.
