Melissa Marr eBook Pre-Order

February 28, 2010 by Michael Gallagher

Amazon is allowing people to pre-order Melissa Marr’s book, Stopping Time, Part 1 for just a penny today – I consider this one free as you just can’t get anything for a penny today.  I don’t know how long that will last: the book is set for release by HarperCollins on March 16th.  I think this is a fairly large deal as her last book (Fragile Eternity) was released 11 months ago, and is still listed for $9.99 and is ranked #2,506 in the Kindle store out of over 400,000 Kindle books.  You can pick up your free copy by clicking here.

Here is the book’s description from the Amazon website:

An exciting e-book original sequel to INK EXCHANGE!  Leslie freed herself of ties to the Dark Court, of all the Faerie courts in fact, and is determined to live on her own terms, attending classes and interacting with other mortals. In her new life she keeps her distance from the fey-though she is painfully aware of them and of the guards that Niall has set to watch her. She knows that Irial watches her too, and she resists the pull to talk to the former Dark King, even as she can’t help stealing glances at him. At least Niall isn’t present to tempt her, and their occasional phone conversations feel almost safe. Her feelings toward the fey may be tangled and contradictory, but she strives to maintain the balance that helps her keep moving forward.  A balance that someone is threatening to break in order to hurt the new and former Dark Kings. Someone she knows all too well.

Two Free Novels from Author NB Van Yoos

February 28, 2010 by Michael Gallagher

N.B. Van Yoos is about to release the fourth book in the Onyalum science fiction series, and is offering the first two books in the series for free on the author’s personal website in a variety of eReader formats, including a Kindle version.  According to the author’s personal website, there is one “catch” and it is up to you if you participate: “if you enjoy this complimentary eBook, please support the author by reviewing this book on Amazon.com, donating through PayPal, or by purchasing other books in the series.”

Seems simple enough to me.

You can click here to access the page (or type http://www.nbvanyoos.com/Downloads.aspx into your web browser) and decide if you want to download the books or not – just be sure to choose the “PRC eBook” option as it is the one that is compatible with your Kindle.  If you scroll down a little past the second book in the series, you will see a couple of other books offered for free.

Kindle Gift Certificates

February 27, 2010 by Michael Gallagher

One of the bigger complaints I have heard from people with Kindles, or those who are trying to shop for someone with a Kindle, is the inability to purchase books for someone as a gift – for example, if I wanted to give someone an eBook copy of Dan Brown’s latest novel The Lost Symbol, I couldn’t just go to the Amazon website and have it sent to them like you can with a regular paper book.  You also can’t “loan” the book to someone like you can with a paper book – in other words, the book I may have on my Kindle can’t be transferred or “loaned” to someone else’s Kindle unless the other Kindle is linked to my account.

While I am certain there are many ways to do it, I can quickly think of one way you can technically give Kindle books to someone – books from the Amazon website, for example, vs. the numerous other places that sell or give away Kindle-compatible eBooks.  I can think of another way, but it may get you and me both in trouble!

This is pretty straight-forward: buy a person who has a Kindle an Amazon gift card say for $25.  For that $25, they can go get two bestsellers (at $9.99 each, assuming it’s not part of the Macmillan group) and still have about five bucks left over for other eBooks, mp3’s, or one of the other 1,000,001 items Amazon sells on its website.  Your $25 will go a lot further than you picking the book out – a paper bestseller at $18 or so will chew the balance on the gift card pretty fast.  You can get an Amazon gift card emailed directly to the participant or print it out on your printer to give to the recipient in their stocking; maybe you could slip it into the box containing the new Kindle you’re giving a loved one?  You can pick up an Amazon gift card by clicking here.

In addition to seeing books that are currently available in the Kindle format, did you know you can do a search for releases in the future – check them out and see if you will like them, maybe pre-order so you can have it delivered wirelessly to your Kindle as soon as it is officially released in Kindle format?  You can – just Click Here.  I have this sorted based on publication date, but you can sort it any way you like: just toggle on the drop-down menu item on the right hand side.

His Robot Girlfriend

February 25, 2010 by Michael Gallagher

One of the more popular books on the Feedbooks website is His Robot Girlfriend by Wesley Allison,, and has received several favorable reviews.  You can pick up your free copy by clicking here, or typing http://www.feedbooks.com/userbook/5854 into your web browser.  Be sure to choose the “Mobipocket / Kindle” option on the right-hand side of your browser to make sure it works for you.

You can see my prior post on how to transfer books from non-Amazon sites to your Kindle by clicking here.

Here is the book’s description as well as a reader review from the Feedbooks website:

Mike Smith’s life was crap, living all alone, years after his wife had died and his children had grown up and moved away. Then he saw the commercial for the Daffodil. Far more than other robots, the Daffodil could become anything and everything he wanted it to be. Mike’s life is about to change.

“I could not put this down. Very good story line that flowed nicely. I am really hoping that you continue on with the characters into another book in the near future.   And now I would really like to place an order for a robot that can do the household chores for me as well :)”

Ditch the iPod and Listen to Music on Your Kindle

February 24, 2010 by Michael Gallagher

In addition to having your Kindle read to your with the test-to-speech option enabled, you can also listen to music.  I don’t know about streaming music over the Internet – I haven’t personally tried it but who knows, it could happen if you had a real good connection – but I am talking about your favorite music in MP3 format.  At this time, pending a future software upgrade, the Kindle only supports MP3’s for playback.

Here are some of the basics:

Music Location:

You will need to transfer your MP3 files over to your Kindle using the USB cord via your computer.  If you haven’t changed the directory structure of your Kindle, you will see three folders: Audible, Documents, and Music.  You want to put your MP3 files in the “Muscis” folder (I know some of you are saying “duh” right now, but some of you are not!).

If you want to organize your music by artist, for example making a folder for “Van Halen” and another for “George Strait,” you can make those folders.  However, the Kindle does not allow (pending a software upgrade) you to navigate via the folders as you are selecting songs.

Playback:

From the Home screen, select Menu, then Experimental, then Play MP3.  If you want to listen to the music while you are reading, just click the “Home” key and navigate to your book and start reading.

If you want to stop the music, just press the “ALT” and spacebar keys at the same time; the same is true if you want to start playing music again.  If you’re tired of the song you’re listening to, just press the “F” key to move to the next song.

Speakers :

While you can listen to your music with the built-in speakers, they sound good to me for what I am using it for – mild background music while I read.  However, if you like to have your music a little louder than other people prefer, or maybe traveling on a plane and don’t want to disturb the person 1.7 inches to your immediate left you can plug in headphones.  Headphones can be plugged into the audio jack located just to the side of your “on/off” switch on the top of your Kindle.

And who needs an iPod these days when you have your Kindle?

What Am I Listening To Right Now?

A country / jazz version of the Beach Boys’ song Sloop John B., as performed by Jerry Jeff Walker.  Makes me want to head to the Caribbean, lounge chair on the beach, cool adult beverage in my hand, and not a care in the world.  Meanwhile, back to reality….

Another Penny Book Update

February 24, 2010 by Michael Gallagher

This is a continuation of my Death of Penny Books on Amazon post, which you can click here to read.

Want to play a game on your Kindle?  This may be like the Pong vs. Space Invaders once the true Kindle Applications store opens, but how about trying Word Morph Volume 1?  You can pick up your free copy by clicking here.

Here is the book’s description from the Amazon website:

How do you make a flip from a flop? Obviously, by changing the i to an o. This is how you play Word Morph. At each step, you can change one letter to form a new word. The task is to transform the starting word one letter at a time until you spell the ending word.

For example, here is a puzzle:

east
—-
—-
west

You can get from east to west like this:

east
past
pest
west

Often puzzles have more than one solution. In the east to west example, you could also do:

east
last
lest
west

or

east
vast
vest
west

Sometimes the sequences are quite long. For example, here is one way to get from teach to learn:

teach
peach
peace
place
plane
plans
plays
slays
stays
stars
sears
years
yearn
learn

Each puzzle comes with one to three solutions. For most solutions a hint is available.

The puzzles are divided into several difficulty levels, from Novice to Expert, based on the length of the solution.

Penny Book for the Saturday Recovery

February 23, 2010 by Michael Gallagher

This is a continuation of my Death of Penny Books on Amazon post, which you can click here to read.

Acupressure Guide For Relieving Hangovers from MobileReference and has received an average rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars based on two customer reviews.  Does it work?  I don’t know, but you can get your copy for a penny by clicking here.  It is also being touted as being formatted for the larger-screen KindleDX.  I have a Kindle2 and not the DX, so I can’t comment on if the claim is true, but for a penny I figure you can check it out for yourself!

Here is the book’s description from the Amazon website:

A hangover is the sum of unpleasant physical effects following heavy consumption of alcohol or the use of other drugs. The most common reported characteristics of a hangover are feelings of extreme thirst (dehydration), feelings of being more tired than usual, nausea and headaches. A good hangover cure should replace essential nutrients lost by the body while counteracting the influence of residual poisons: drink a large amount of water, preferably sports drink such as Powerade or Gatorade, eat mineral-rich foods, like pickles or canned fish.

Acupressure is an effective way to relieve painful sensation associated with hangover. Sit comfortably or lie down, close your eyes and breath deeply when massaging the active points.

Product Features:

  • Practical and fully illustrated.
  • Step-by-step guide to treatment of every condition.
  • Every step explains point location, direction of force, and duration of massage.
  • No previous experience necessary.
  • It is not necessary to massage active points on your own, you can ask somebody else to massage points for you.
  • Total treatment duration for most conditions is 10 to 15 minutes.
